Level up

When TayTay returns this year to complain that her midnights become her afternoons, we can certainly wholeheartedly relate, as that has been our story since we were kids. Angst continues to reign over our lives, but it has also been a year of significant seismic shifts and milestones, expediting matters that should have been settled long ago. We're putting serious skin in the game. Now we have finally stepped up to par, and levelled up.

Roxy Music commemorated their 50th anniversary with a world tour this year, and Bryan Ferry also gave us his rendition of an old classic that we love.

We've included a brief series of Miami bass tracks this year. To acknowledge Simon Rex's star turn in Sean Baker's Red Rocket, we added a classic of his from a few years back that is a worthy ode to receiving head. It seems like we have been singing the praises of eatin' and poppin' pussy over and over again on these surveys since we started, and we feel it's finally about time that we honour the incomparable pastime of sucking cock. Thank you Dirt Nasty.

Fortunately, Mr Rex is not the only one this year demanding oral gratification. The imperative to suck dick comes from no less a figure than the cheeky lasses from Isle of Wight's biggest indie band ever, in the form of the sublime Wet Leg!

Continuing on the theme of oral gratification for me is the inclusion of Kim's cheeky 'Throat goat.' As you may have already noticed, Miss Petras has already been represented in this year's mix by her delicious 'Coconuts.' We usually do not include tracks already included on our friend Robert's annual mix from 2021, but her song is such an exceptionally well-crafted confection of pop that we any qualms we have about re-using it this year has been evaporated.

We've finally achieved our long overdue Welsh language debut here with Super Furry Animals' vintage track from 2000. This song brings the number of languages represented here on these surveys up to seventeen.

So why are we stealing from Johnson/Panas's sleeve for Electonic's 'Get the Message'? Because we finally got the chance to see New Order and the Pet Shop Boys perform in concert in their Unity tour, after its being postponed for two long years.

Finally, the Queen Bey is back after an absence of six years from these surveys, and she's ready to disco!
