The legendary Farnsworth House once again graces this year's cover art. We apologise that this year's slightly Teutonic flavoured collection comes in late due to uncooperative travel plans. Partly because we were visiting Germany, this compilation opens with a postcard of sorts from Berlin. Commissioned by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe Gesellschaft (BVG), the city's transit agency, this track was quite popular during our stay there, as it was overhead a few times at various locales. Its cheeky video presents a rather evocative slice of life in Berlin in all its diversity (not to mention the Turkish-German MC Kazim's Berlin-accented delivery). Considering the German-language opening and title, we hope that you are enjoying the ongoing eclecticism and variety of these mixes. So far, songs rendered in eleven different languages have been represented on these surveys: English-Scots, Spanish, French, Korean, Russian, Hebrew, Gaelic, Finnish, Mandarin, Hindi, and now, German.

Some curatorial notes: David Bowie has just left us forever, but commemoration would have to wait until next year’s survey. For better or worse, this is the year of the Bieber fever, as he makes no less than three appearances on this year’s compilation. How did we wind up here? Flight of the Conchords are here because I miss Jemaine, Bret, and Murray terribly. Dick Gaughan is also here this year because we attended a rare concert of his in Vancouver. We also comply with Canadian content regulations this year, as Canadian artists have been featured seven times here. Incidentally, in case you've been keeping track, New Order, Madge, and Destiny's Child have all appeared together in the 2001 collection.

Drizzy finally makes an appearance here. When you first hear 'Hotline,' you're immediately blown away. Not because it's necessarily a musical masterpiece, but because its vibes feel so outlier that you somehow get the sense that half the pop music that you'll be hearing for the next three to four years will try to sound like him.

This year we've finally got down to the task of reading Morrissey's Autobiography. One of the primary takeaways from it is that the 60s vintage Bardot track included here, to paraphrase the author, is no less than one of the highlights of Western civilisation. We will not disagree.

Taking a cue from our recent facebook profile cover, this year's cover art, including the Farnsworth House, are selections from the wonderfully analogue architectural 'combines' crafted by incredible British artist Lucy Williams.

For your convenience again this year, a m3u playlist file as been included in the zip package to ensure easy proper sequencing for the mp3 tracks. (Incidentally, we've also gone back through 2011 and fixed those previous years' faulty m3u files.)
