In
society today, there has been an ever increasing use of wireless technology.
More specifically, the technology, Wi-Fi, has become
a commonplace tool in many of the institutions that humans see on a everyday
experience: business offices, homes, and school campuses. The use of this
new communications technology has had significant impact on the way students
go about their daily lives on campus, often providing numerous benefits
and conveniences that were not offered before. Practically every aspect
of a student's life--social, academic, extracurricular, communication--has
been affected by this technology in some way or manner. However, whether
it actually improves the learning experience or productive efficiency
in an educational institution is questionable as there are mutliple purposes
in which students use Wi-Fi for. This could be both detrimental or beneficial.
This research project further
dwelves into the wi-fi technology and how it has been implemented in educational
institutions like the University of California, Berkeley. Like any other
technology, there are drawbacks and benefits in the implementation. This
research project should shed some light on on the question,
Is wi-fi worth the investment
for educational institutions?
Without a doubt there is
a convenience factor with wi-fi for its users. Furthermore, its provides
a cost-saving options versus wired LAN. However, wi-fi will prove
nothing more than that unless educational institutions take the initiative
to implement some type of system or application to really embrace learning
through technology.
