PROJECT AREA: WASTE
Americans throw away more than 253 million tons of solid waste every year. Existing landfills are reaching capacity and new landfills are hard to site because no one wants a new landfill next to their homes or businesses. Recycling then becomes very important to not only reduce the amount of waste going into landfills, but also to reduce the amount of energy, water and virgin material resources to create new products. Also, recycling is athe law. Alameda County (which includes the City of Berkeley) is mandated to reduce its waste by 75% by 2010. The UC System's goal is to recycle 50% of its waste by 2008, 75% by 2012, and ultimately becoming zero-waste by 2020.

CAMPUS RECYCLING AND REFUSE SERVICES (CRRS)
Campus Recycling and Refuse Services (CRRS) is a campus unit within PP-CS that handles all of the refuse and most of the recycling collection at UC Berkeley, from beverage containers, greenwaste and wood, toner cartridges, and mixed metal to garbage collection, debris box ordering, and portable toilets ordering. CRRS works with many other entities on campus to operate these programs, such as Custodial Services in the indoor collection of paper recycling bins, and Ground Services to collect greenwaste and plant debris.
Don't know what is recyclable? Visit CRRS' website for all of campus' recycling information.
Current projects CRRS is working on:
- Campus-wide compost collection (including residence halls, co-ops and Greek system). With BSAC, composting programs are being implemented University Hall, A&E, Eshleman, and Barrows for 2011-2012.
