My name is Yonatan Mintz and I am currently an assistant professor at the department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin Madison. Previously I was postdoctoral research fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and before that I completed my PhD at the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department at UC Berkeley. My research focuses on the application of machine learning and automated decision making to human sensitive contexts. One application of my research has been on using patient level data, to create precision weight loss interventions that increase patient adherence. I have had the opportunity to incorporate some of these algorithms into the Cal Fitness app which received coverage in the Daily Californian, Berkeley Engineer, and on the main Berkeley Engineering site. I am also interested in other aspects of personalized healthcare such as personalized drug dosing, neuro-degenerative disease progression monitoring, and mental resilience and psychological well being. In terms of methodology my research has also explored topics in machine learning, stochastic control, reinforcement learning, and nonconvex optimization.
Recently I have also been speaking on my work in AI safety, and hot large AI models such as chat GPT will impact individuals in society both in print and in live interviews .
I received my bachelor's degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering with a concentration in Operations Research from Georgia Tech in 2012. Between my undergraduate studies and graduate school I worked at both Google as a data scientist and Caterpillar as a supply chain engineer. During my PhD I have also had the privilege of mentoring students and working with the Phillipines California Advanced Research Institutes as well as teaching classes in operations management, optimization, and data science.
