1. Review

Ross Ch.1 Introduction

- We defined the set of natural numbers and explored its successor property:
if nn ϵ\epsilon N\mathbb{N} then n+1n+1 also in N\mathbb{N}.
- We defined Induction, a method which is used to prove an infinite number of successive propositions. Induction always begins by defining a base case. If some proposition holds for this base case then one may assume the proposition hold for all nn and then prove that it must then hold true for n+1n+1.
- We also defined the set of rational numbers Q\mathbb{Q} and the set of integers Z\mathbb{Z} both of which have the property of being ordered meaning that there is a notion of some greater than and less than between all of their elements.
- The Rational Zeros Theorem states that the only rational candidates for solutions of the polynomial:
cnxn+cn1xn1++c1x+c0=0c_nx^n+c_{n-1}x^{n-1}+\cdots+c_1x+c_0=0
have the form r=cdr=\frac{c}{d} where cc divides c0c_0 and dd divides cnc_n

Example: 2\sqrt{2} is not a rational number
The only rational solutions of x22=0x^2-2=0 are ±1\pm1, ±2\pm2. 2\sqrt{2} is a solution to x22=0x^2-2=0 thus it is not a rational number.

It can be seen that the Rational Zeros Theorem provides a convenient way of identifying potential rational roots of very complex polynomials.
- Next we discussed the set of Real Numbers R\mathbb{R} which can be represented as the real number line.
- R\mathbb{R} is an ordered field. It is the mathematical system on which we will do our analysis.

- maximum: Let SRS\subset\mathbb{R}, α\alpha ϵ\epsilon SS α\alpha is a maximum if \forall β\beta ϵ\epsilon SS, α\alpha \geq β\beta
- minimum: Let SRS\subset\mathbb{R}, α\alpha ϵ\epsilon SS α\alpha is a minimum if \forall β\beta ϵ\epsilon SS, αβ\alpha\leq\beta
- {rr ϵ\epsilon Q\mathbb{Q} : 0r20 \leq r \leq \sqrt{2}} has a minimum of 0 but does not have a maximum because 2\sqrt{2} does not belong to the set but there are rationals in the set arbitrarily close to 2\sqrt{2}
- supremum If S is bounded above and S has a least upper bound then we call this the supremeum of S
- infimum If S is bounded below and has a greatest lower bound then we call this the infimum of S
Example: inf{n(1)nn^{(-1)^n} : nϵNn \epsilon \mathbb{N}} = 0
The Completeness Axiom: Every nonempty subset S of R\mathbb{R} that is bounded above has a least upper bound i.e. sup\supS exists. Same goes for lower bounds and the greatest lower bound.
- The Completeness Axiom does not hold for Q\mathbb{Q}
- Archimedean Property: if a > 0 and b > 0 then nϵZ+\exists n \epsilon \mathbb{Z}^+ : na > b
- Denseness of Q\mathbb{Q}: If a,b ϵR\epsilon \mathbb{R} and a < b, then rϵQ\exists r \epsilon \mathbb{Q}: a < r < b
- \infty and -\infty are not real numbers but are very useful to include. [a,)={xϵR:ax}[a, \infty) = \{x \epsilon \mathbb{R} : a \leq x \} (a,)={xϵR:a<x}(a, \infty) = \{x \epsilon \mathbb{R} : a < x \} (,b]={xϵR:xb}( -\infty, b] = \{ x \epsilon \mathbb{R} : x \leq b \} (,b)={xϵR:x<b}( -\infty, b) = \{x \epsilon \mathbb{R} : x < b \}

Ross Ch. 2 Sequences

- definition of sequence convergent: (sn)(s_n) converges to ss if ϵ>0,N{\forall \epsilon > 0, \exists N} such that n>Nsns<ϵ.{n > N \Rightarrow |s_n - s| < \epsilon.}

example: show that limn1n2=0\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty}{\frac{1}{n^2}} = 0.

Let ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, N=1ϵ{N = \frac{1}{\sqrt{\epsilon}}}. Then n>Nn>1ϵn2>1ϵ{n > N \Rightarrow n > \frac{1}{\sqrt{\epsilon}} \Rightarrow n^2 > \frac{1}{\epsilon}} and hence ϵ>1n2{\epsilon > \frac{1}{n^2}}. Thus n>N1n20<ϵn > N \Rightarrow |\frac{1}{n^2} - 0| < \epsilon.

- 9.1 Theorem: Convergent sequences are bounded - Additivity and homogeneity are properties of convergence. i.e. if limsn=s\lim{s_n} = s and kϵRk \epsilon \mathbb{R} then limksn=ks\lim{ks_n} = ks and if limsn=s\lim{s_n} = s, limtn=t\lim{t_n} = t then limsn+tn=s+t\lim{s_n + t_n} = s + t - lim1sn=1s\lim{\frac{1}{s_n}} = \frac{1}{s}, it follows that limtnsn=ts\lim{\frac{t_n}{s_n}} = \frac{t}{s}

Rudin ch. 2 Basic Topology
First we define the set definitions of function, image, inverse image, onto, and one-to-one. I offer the definition of one-to-one below:

Let A and B be two sets and let ff be a mapping of A into B. If yϵB\forall y \epsilon B, f1(y)f^{-1}(y) consists of at most one element of A then ff is a one-to-one mapping of A into B.

Then we introduce the notions of size such as finite, infinite, countable, uncountable, and at most countable

Every infinite subset of a countable set is countable.

Metric Spaces
A metric is a distance function which must satisfy the following properties:

open and closed balls

We are given several definitions as follows:

2.19 Theorem
Every neighborhood is an open set.
2.20 Theorem
If pp is a limit point of E then every neighborhood of pp contains infinitely many points in E.
2.23 Theorem
A set is open iff its complement is closed.
2.24 Theorem
1. arbitrary union of open sets is open
2. arbitrary intersection of closed sets is closed
3. finite intersection of open sets is open
4. finite union of closed sets is closed
Proof uses the relation: (αFα)c=αFαc(\bigcap_{\alpha}F_{\alpha})^c = \bigcup_{\alpha}F_{\alpha}^c

Next we introduced notion of a closure of a set which is equal to the set but with the addition of its limit points.

Compact Sets
open cover of E in metric space X is a collection{GαG_{\alpha}} of open subsets of X such that EαGαE \subset \bigcup_{\alpha} G_{\alpha}
K in X is compact if every open cover of K contains a finite subcover. i.e. There exist finite indices such that: KG1G2GmK \subset G_1 \cup G_2 \cup \cdots \cup G_m Heine-Borel Theorem: If E in $\mathbb{R}^k then E compact \Leftrightarrow E closed and bounded.
Example: (0,1)ϵRk(0, 1) \epsilon \mathbb{R}^k is not compact because it is not closed and so we have (1n,11n)\bigcup (\frac{1}{n}, 1 - \frac{1}{n}) which is an open cover of (0, 1) that does not have a finite subcover.

Compactness brings us many interesting theorems such as Theorem 2.35 closed subsets of compact sets are compact
Theorem 2.41: If E is in Rk\mathbb{R}^k then TFAE
(a) E is closed and bounded
(b) E is compact
c) Every infinite subset of E has a limit point in E

Continuity
3 Definitions: (Credit to Kaylene Stocking because I really liked the way she described the definitions)
The limit perspective: Let (xn)(x_n) be a sequence of points in the domain of ff that converges to some x0ϵSx_0 \epsilon S. The sequence f(xn)f(xn) must converge to f(x0)f(x_0)

The bounded rate of change perspective: Pick any point x0ϵSx_0 \epsilon S and any ε>0\varepsilon > 0. There must exist some δ>0\delta > 0 so that moving less than δ\delta away from x0x_0 results in a change of less than ε\varepsilon in the value of f(x)f(x).
formal definition: ff is continuous at point pp if ε>0δ>0\forall \varepsilon > 0 \exists \delta > 0 such that dy(f(x),f(p))<εd_y(f(x), f(p)) < \varepsilon xϵE\forall x \epsilon E for which dx(x,p)<δd_x(x, p) < \delta Then if f is continuous at every p in its domain, f is continuous overall.

The topological perspective: Let E be an open subset of the range of f. The set of points in the domain of f that f maps into E must also be open.

Uniform Convergence

-Definition: Let (fn)(f_n) be a seq. of real-valued functions defined on set SRS \subseteq \mathbb{R}. (fn)(f_n) converges uniformly on S to a function ff if ε>0,N\forall \varepsilon > 0, \exists N such that fn(x)f(x)<εxϵS,n>N|f_n(x) - f(x)| < \varepsilon \forall x \epsilon S, \forall n > N

Example: Let fn(x)=nxnf_n(x) = nx^n for xϵ[0,1)x \epsilon [0, 1). We show that convergence is not uniform. If it were there would exist NϵNN \epsilon \mathbb{N} such that nxn0<1xϵ[0,1),n>N|nx^n - 0| < 1 \forall x \epsilon [0, 1), n > N In particular we would have (N+1)xN+1<1xϵ[0,1)(N + 1)x^{N + 1} < 1 \forall x \epsilon [0, 1). But this fails for xx sufficiently close to 1: consider 1(N+1)1N+1\frac{1}{(N + 1)^\frac{1}{N + 1}}.

Differentiation

5.2 Theorem: If ff is defferentiable at xx then ff is continuous at xx.

Mean Value Theorems These theorems let us extrapolate data about arbitrary points on a function in a range [a, b] for which f is defined. If a point on f is a local min or local max then its derivative at that point is 0.

Generalized MVT: If f,gf, g are continuous on [a, b] and differentiable on (a, b) then xϵ(a,b)\exists x \epsilon (a, b) such that [f(b)f(a)]g(x)=[g(b)g(a)]f(x)[f(b) - f(a)]g'(x) = [g(b) - g(a)]f'(x)

MVT: f(b)f(a)ba=f(x)\frac{f(b) - f(a)}{b - a} = f'(x)

Rolle's Theorem (special case of MVT): If f is continuous and differentiable on (a, b) then f(a)=f(b)f(a) = f(b) then there exists at least one x in (a, b) such that f(x)=0f'(x) = 0.

Continuity of Derivatives Theorem: Suppose ff is a real differentiable function on [a, b] and suppose f(a)<λ<f(b)f'(a) < \lambda < f'(b) then there is a point x in (a, b) such that f(x)=λf'(x) = \lambda

-useful corollary: If f is differentiable on (a, b) then f can not have any simple discontinuities on (a, b).

L'Hopital's Theorem
Let ss signify aa, a+a^+, aa^-, \infty, or -\infty where aϵRa \epsilon \mathbb{R} and suppose ff and gg are differentiable functions for which the following limit exists: limxsf(x)g(x)=L\lim_{x \rightarrow s} \frac{f'(x)}{g'(x)} = L If limxsf(x)=limxsg(x)=0\lim_{x \rightarrow s} f(x) = \lim_{x \rightarrow s} g(x) = 0 or if limxsg(x)= \lim_{x \rightarrow s} |g(x)| = \infty then limxsf(x)g(x)=L\lim_{x \rightarrow s} \frac{f(x)}{g(x)} = L In other words, we can take the derivative of the top and bottom when f over g is in some indeterminate form and this will give us the same limit and may be easier to calculate the limit from.

Taylor's Theorem
If ff is a smooth function (is infinitely differentiable) then k=0fk©k!(xc)k\sum_{k = 0}^{\infty} \frac{f^k©}{k!}(x - c)^k is the Taylor series of f about c. We can stop k at a certain index to get a partial representation of ff with some error. The error formula is: Rn(x)=f(x)k=0n1fk©k!(xc)kR_n(x) = f(x) - \sum_{k = 0}{n - 1} \frac{f^k©}{k!}(x - c)^k The remainder depends on f and c. Furthermore we may have that f(x)=k=0fk©k!(xc)kf(x) = \sum_{k = 0}^{\infty} \frac{f^k©}{k!}(x - c)^k iff limnRn(x)=0\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} R_n(x) = 0 But the remainder need not always tend to zero. Hence we can have ff not given exactly by its Taylor series.
The actual Taylor's Theorem
Let ff be defined on (a, b) where a < c < b. Suppose the nth derivative of f(x) exists on (a, b). Then for each xcx \neq c in (a, b) there is some yy between c and x such that Rn(x)=fn(y)n!(xc)nR_n(x) = \frac{f^n(y)}{n!}(x - c)^n



2. Questions

1. I do not understand the solution to HW10 question 4:
Prove f(x)=n=14nφ(4nx)f(x) = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} 4^{-n} \varphi (4^n x) is everywhere continuous but nowhere differentiable, φ\varphi(x)=min{xnnϵZ|x-n||n \epsilon \mathbb{Z}}.
The goal of this problem is to essentially create a function which has edges everywhere so that it is not differentiable at any point. The graph of φ\varphi as given in the problem is nondifferentiable at x=n+12x=n+\frac{1}{2} where nn is any integer.We are then gping to define hn(x)h_n(x) to be a multiple of 14\frac{1}{4} or 14\frac{-1}{4} function that is to be honest I still have no idea what this proof is saying lol.

2. Proof of Theorem 19.2 from Ross: If ff is continuous on closed interval [a, b] then ff is uniformly continuous on [a, b]. Proof states that a subsequence xnkx_{n_k} of xnx_n converges to x0=limkxnk=limkynkx_0 = \lim_k{x_{n_k}} = \lim_k{y_{n_k}} since ff is continuous at x0x_0. I am unsure how they achieve limkxnk=limkynk\lim_k{x_{n_k}} = \lim_k{y_{n_k}} also I am unsure how this theorem is true given we can have very steep slopes on closed intervals which make it difficult or impossible to assign a delta to every ϵ>0\epsilon > 0 such that uniform continuity is achieved.

3. Theorem 9.1 of Ross: Convergent sequences are bounded. What if sn=1n1s_n = \frac{1}{n-1} and nn starts at 1?
Answer: This sequence doesn't make sense because the first term is undefined.

4. In proof of Ross Theorem 33.4 (ii): (c,d)[a,b]{(c, d) \subseteq [a, b]}, how could (c,d)=[a,b]{(c, d) = [a, b]}?
Answer: (Courtesy of Prof) The two cannot be equal but the statement still reads true.

5. In proof of Ross Theorem 33.5, I am unsure how one can claim M(f|f|, S) - m{m}(f|f|, S) \leq M(f|f|, U) - m{m}(f|f|, U)
I believe the answer to this question is due to the fact that inffinff\inf |f| \leq \inf f

6. Does a subsequence have to have an equation (in terms of k) for generating the n-index of sns_n or could we technically just pick random n indices?

7. From Rudin ch. 2 pg. 33: Why is the set of all complex zz such that z1|z| \leq 1 a perfect set and why is zz such that z<1|z| < 1 not perfect?

8. Why is a nonempty finite set closed? Answer: It has no interior points. Thus it cannot be open. Furthermore a single point is closed and we have the property that the union of finitely many closed sets is closed. A nonempty finite set is obviously the union of single points and thus is closed.

9. Is the set (1,1)Q(−1,1) \cap \mathbb{Q} open in Q\mathbb{Q}? Is it closed in $\mathbb{Q}?
Answer: (1,1)(-1, 1) is open in \mathbb{Q} by definition of the induced topology. The induced topology states that …

10. Is the set (2,2)Q{(\sqrt{− 2}, \sqrt{2}) \cap \mathbb{Q}} open in Q\mathbb{Q}? Is it closed in Q\mathbb{Q}? It is both open and closed because (2,2)Q=[2,2]Q{(\sqrt{− 2}, \sqrt{2}) \cap \mathbb{Q} = [\sqrt{-2}, \sqrt{2}] \cap \mathbb{Q}}.

11. What is the difference between regular convergence and uniform convergence?
Answer: Uniform convergence deals with functions, in order to satisy uniform convergence a sequence of functions must converge towards the limit function for every point xϵRx \epsilon \mathbb{R}. For each ε>0N{\varepsilon > 0 \exists N} such that fn(x)f(x)<εxϵS,n>N{|f_n(x) − f(x)| < \varepsilon} {\forall x \epsilon S}, {\forall n > N}. Regular convergence does not deal with functions but rather single values in some field.

12. Is the set (0,2)Q(0, 2) \cap \mathbb{Q} connected? No, choose γ\gamma to be an irrational number. Let S=(0,2)QS = (0, 2) \cap \mathbb{Q}. Let S1=S(,γ),S2=S(γ,)S_1 = S \cap (-\infty, \gamma), S_2 = S \cap (\gamma, \infty) Then S1S_1 and S2S_2 are both open and nonempty in S. Thus S is disconnected.

13. Find a subset K ⊂ Q, such that K is closed and bounded in Q, but not compact.

14. Find a subset K ⊂ Q, such that K is compact and K is an infinite set.

15. If A is open, then f(A) is open. FALSE why? Answer: consider the continuous mapping from (0,1)ϵR(0, 1) \epsilon \mathbb{R} to {0}\{0\}. The range is closed but the domain is open.

16. If A is closed, then f(A) is closed. FALSE, why? Answer:

17. Why is {f1(U0):U0ϵU}\{f^{-1}(U_0) : U_0 \epsilon U\} a cover of E, where E is the domain set of ff and UU is the open cover of f(E)f(E)? Answer: Let xϵEx \epsilon E. Then as UU is a cover of f(E)f(E), f(x)ϵU0f(x) \epsilon U_0 for some U0ϵUU_0 \epsilon U. Thus xϵf1(U).x \epsilon f^{-1}(U).
