मंटो की सर्वश्रेष्ठ कहानियाँ शीर्षक कहानी संग्रह श्री नंदकिशोर विक्रम द्वारा सम्पादित किया गया है। इस संग्रह में सआदत हसन मंटो जैसे उर्दू के ऐसे कहानीकार की कहानियाँ संकलित की गयी हैं जिनकी हिंदी में सर्वाधिक कहानियाँ प्रकाशित हुई हैं।
मंटो हिंदुस्तान और पाकिस्तान की साझी विरासत के सशक्त कहानीकार थे।
इस संकलन में मंटो की विविध विषयों को लेकर लिखी गयी बीस कहानियों को स्थान प्रदान किया गया है। उन्होंने जीवन के यथार्थ को बहुत बारीकी से देखा था।
देश के विभाजन और साम्प्रदिक दंगो की त्रासदियों को झेला और अनुभूत किया था। यही कारण है की मंटो की सर्वश्रेष्ठ कहानियाँ जीवन के कटु यथार्थ और घनीभूत पीड़ा के ताने-बानो से बुनी गयी हैं।
इन बीस कहानियों को सामान्यतः दो भागों में बांटा जा सकता हैं। पहली वे जिनका मूल विषय यौन है (ऐसी कहानियाँ जिनके कारण उनपर अश्लीलता का ठप्पा लगा दिया गया) और दूसरी वे जिनमें मानव जीवन और मानव स्वभाव के विविध पक्षों को उजागर किया गया है।
‘काली, शलवार’, ‘धुआँ’, ‘ठंडा गोश्त’, ‘फुँदने’, ‘बू’ आदि कहानियाँ यौन संबंधों के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती हैं। यदि यह कहा जाये की यह हमारे समाज का वह नग्न सत्य प्रस्तुत करती हैं जिनसे हम संभवतः अछूते हैं तो यह गलत न होगा।
‘काली शलवार’ एक वैश्या के परिवर्तनीय जीवन की कथा कहती है तो ‘धुआँ’ में मंटो ने समलैंगिक संबंधों को दर्शाया है।
उनकी ‘फूँदने’, ‘बू’ आदि कहानियाँ भी मानव के भीतर छिपी यौन इच्छाओं को विभिन्न रूपों में प्रस्तुत करती हैं। इन कहानियों में कहीं भी दुराव-छिपाव न होकर सर्वत्र पारदर्शिता दिखाई देती है।
मंटो की अन्य कहानियाँ देश के विभाजन से उत्पन्न भय, आक्रोश, असुरक्षा, पीड़ा, स्वार्थपरता, परवशता आदि की कथा कहती हैं।
‘खुदा की कसम’ एक ऐसी मुस्लिम माँ की कहानी है जिसकी बेटी एक सिख से विवाह करने के बाद अपनी सुरक्षा के लिए अपनी माँ तक को पहचानने से मना कर देती है।
‘खोल दो’ एक युवती के साथ हुए अनेक बलात्कार और उससे उत्पन्न उसकी मन: स्थिति का वर्णन करती है। इस युवती को पुरुष की سبز छवि में उसका घिनौना रूप दिखाई देता है। इस कहानी का अंत मन-मस्तिष्क को झकझोर कर आखों की कोरों को भिगो जाता है।
‘गुरमुख सिंह की वसीयत’, ‘टोबा टेक सिंह’ आदि कुछ ऐसी ही कहानियाँ हैं जो विभाजन की पीड़ा को अभिव्यक्त करती हैं।
उनकी अन्य कहानियों में ‘दो कौमें’ एक ऐसे युवक-युवती की प्रेम कथा है जो धार्मिक संकीर्णता को प्रदर्शित करती है।
‘नंगी आवाज़ें’ में उन निम्नवर्गीय जोड़ों की परवशता को दर्शाया गया है जो अपने वैवाहिक रिश्तों को एकांत के अभाव में खूबसूरती से नहीं निभा पाते हैं, जिससे अनेक प्रकार की समस्याएँ जन्म लेती हैं।
उनकी कहानी ‘नया कानून’ अंग्रेज़ों द्वारा पारित जनविरोधी कानून ‘रौलट एक्ट’ की प्रतिक्रिया है, तो ‘तमाशा’ जलियाँवाला बाग हत्याकांड से प्रेरित है।
इसके अतिरिक्त ‘गोपीनाथ’, ‘मम्मदभाई’, ‘शहीद साज़’,’शाह दौले का चूहा’, ‘शिकारी औरतें’, ‘सड़क के किनारे’ आदि कहानियों में जीवन का यथार्थ, मानव स्वभाव, और मानव जीवन के विविध पहलुओं को विविध रंगों में प्रस्तुत किया गया है।
जहाँ तक लेखन का प्रश्न है मंटो ने कम से कम चुने हुए शब्दों में अपनी बात को पाठकों के समक्ष प्रस्तुत किया है। उर्दू के शब्दों का आधिक्य होते हुए भी उनकी भाषा जन सामान्य की भाषा है।
सच तो यह है कि उनकी कहानियाँ बीसवीं सदी जितनी ही, आज की इक्कीसवीं सदी में भी प्रासंगिक हैं। समय बदल गया है, परिवेश बदल गया है पर समस्याएं आज भी वही हैं।
संभवतः आज भी कुछ लोगों को ये कहानियाँ अश्लील लग सकती हैं परन्तु मंटो के प्रशंसकों के लिए यह कहानी संग्रह अपनी उपादेयता सिद्ध करता है।
उनकी कहानियों को पढ़ने और उनकी गहराई को समझने के लिए पाठकों को एक नई सोच और एक नई दृष्टि की आवश्यकता है। अंत में यही कहना चाहूंगी की मंटो की सर्वश्रेष्ठ कहानियाँ के संपादन के लिए श्री नंदकिशोर विक्रम जी बधाई के पात्र हैं।
