Democracy and Islamic Government
James A. Piazza
The central focus and thesis of this essay is to illustrate the compatibility between the modern democratic
political model, as defined by the extent of individual participation allowed by the government and the
responsiveness of the government to the desires of the individual, and the contemporary Sunni models of Islamic
government. A system of meaningful democratic participation within Islamic government is argued to be possible
upon consideration of the institutions provided by Islamic government, the strong concept of constitutionalism
advocated in Islamic government and the value of representation and guardianship prescribed by Islamic
government.
