Terrorism in the Name of Islam: Appropriate Muslim Responses Rooted in a Tradition of Justice

Joanna Corman

Excerpt: "A few days after the third anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Sen. Dianne Feinstein gave an interview with a radio station in San Francisco. The wide-ranging discussion touched on terrorism in the name of Islam. Feinstein spoke about the war in Iraq and alluded to Beslan, Russia where Chechen and possibly Arab terrorists took school children hostage for three days and killed more than 330, half of them children, a few days before the interview. It was one of the most horrific examples of terrorism using the name of Islam to promote violence. While iraqis are fighting an occupying force, which the Qur'an allows, some are also beheading civilians, which the Qur'an forbids. "We're dealing with people who know no shame, who have no moral values, who will kill children, who will kill innocents, who will kill anybody standing in their path...," Feinstein said. She went to say, "The time has come for good Muslims everywhere to say, 'We don't condone this. Stop it.'"
