Conclusion

The online communities formed within MMORPGs function as a medium for global social collaboration.  Therefore, players engaged in these online environments are able to actively interact with one another; thus forming meaningful and long-lasting relationships.  Due to the fact that MMORPGs require a significant investment in time to progress, players often times cooperate with acquaintances in-game and as a result, form networks of intricate relationships.  In addition, the immersive nature of the social collaboration while playing enhances players’ individual characteristics and assist in acquiring new skills.  As a result, such leadership qualities gained from cooperating and interacting with others while in-game, are applicable in real-life situations.  Moreover, MMORPGs allow for unique online environments where teenagers, college students, young professional adults, home-makers and retirees to interact and collaborate on a daily basis.  There are few other online communities which possess such a diverse range of social statuses.

MMORPGs have such wide-range appeal because it allows individuals to socialize without fear of face-to-face interactions, as the focus is more on the chat messages from the text-based chat interface. According to Papargyris and Poulymenaku (2004), people are using mediums such as MMORPGs to, "... to communicate with other peers by bridging physical and social proximity." This is a very accurate statement; as technology improves and becomes more dependent on the internet, people will find it more convenient to interact online, as opposed to meeting in person.

It is evident that this type of gaming is not a “guiltless” indulgence, but like all other forms of entertainment, moderation is crucial.  Players may find themselves engrossed in the game and may neglect responsibilities such as family, friends, work or school.   However, the majority of players keep themselves accountable and exercise restraint.  Therefore, few people are actually clinically diagnosed with “internet addiction” due to MMORPGs, as other online obsessions (i.e. pornography) are much more detrimental.  In conclusion, these minor pitfalls do not detract from the beneficial aspects - social collaboration, interaction, cooperation and acquisition of essential life skills, of MMORPGs.
