Workshop: Somatic Psychotherapy

Cambria Lowe, LMFT

As a Somatic Psychotherapist in private practice in Berkeley, CA, my practice is rooted in the training I have received in Family Systems and Psychodynamic theory. I work holistically, taking into consideration my client's relationship with her/his body, including personal history with exercise, sleep and sexuality. I also work with breath, sensory awareness, movement and other tools as appropriate.

It has been very important to me to bring my interest in social issues into my training as a psychotherapist. Studying Ecopsychology, and being explicit in how our relationship with our bodies affects our relationship with the natural world has been one way that I have woven together Somatics and larger social concerns. I have also been involved with the Healing Center for Survivors of Political Torture and worked for five years at San Francisco General Hospital's refugee clinic, where I facilitated the Vietnamese Men's Support Group. In addition, I developed and facilitated a somatic-oriented support group for Cambodian men who are survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime while working at Jewish Family and Children’s Services in Oakland. My interest in creativity, non-violent change, our connection to the natural world, the healing of trauma, and sensitivity to multi-cultural issues, all inform my work with clients.

I received my undergraduate degree from Oberlin College and my master’s degree in counseling psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies’s Somatics Program. I also have specialized training in working with trauma from the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute in Boulder, CO and, and received extensive training and experience working with couples from the Women’s Therapy Center in El Cerrito, CA.
