I was born in Santa Barbara, California and have two sisters. My sisters and my mother still live in Santa Barbara. I attended Santa Barbara High School and Santa Barbara City College.

I received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in history from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where I also worked as a teaching assistant in the History Department.

During the summer of 1978 I worked as a teaching assistant in the History Department at Colorado State University, in Fort Collins Colorado.

After receiving my M.A., I worked in the Library at the University of California Santa Barbara, first as a supervisor at the Loan Desk, and then as the head of the Serials Services Unit in the Circulation Department.

In 1991, I moved from Santa Barbara to Berkeley to attend the School of Library and Information Studies (subsequently the School of Information Management Systems) at the University of California, Berkeley, where I received a Master of Library and Information Studies in 1992. Since that time I've been employed in the Archives and Records Office at the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (for more detailed information on my education and work experience, please see my resume).
