This course is a lecture course which provides a basic understanding of the properties of materials. The course is the introductory course for the materials science & engineering major, but it is required for other engineering majors including chemical engineering. For non-majors, the course covers a wide range of topics to set a foundation for understanding materials and the properties which make materials desirable for practical applications. The lab course MSE 45L applies the principles of MSE 45 to a laboratory setting.
PHYS 7A (may be taken concurrently)
3 hours of lecture per week, ~3 hours per problem set.
For chemical engineers, this course can be taken in any semester. .
The course emphasis varies slightly in the Spring versus the Fall. I took the course in the Spring, so topics may vary slightly from those of the Fall.
