Kizomba

Kizomba – A Modern Phenomenon

Kizomba Performance
Kizomba Performance

Kizomba is a modern dance that originated in Angola and stems from the traditional dance Semba. The word “kizomba” means “party” in Kimbundu, a language largely spoken in Angola. Kizomba is both a genre of dance and music. Kizomba dance and music developed from the French Caribbean zouk music following the 1980s due to cultural exchange; mainly through a visit to Africa by the zouk band Kassav. Kizomba mixes a sensual touch with African rhythms and the dance itself demands good musicality and body control due to the precision of many moves. The relatively slow rhythm of the music prompts creativity in the dance interpretation. The creativity can be particularly expressed with precise and athletic movements as shown in the performance above. Most of the Kizomba music we hear today has either Portuguese or French lyrics due to its origin story. Kizomba has recently spread to the Western world and has become a phenomenon.

Our Kizomba

Salsa@Cal currently does not offer any formal classes in Kizomba. Our instructors are also currently learning the dance. However, we occasionally play Kizomba music at our socials. If you would like to learn how to dance Kizomba, ask one of our instructors or board members and we will gladly teach you what we know about Kizomba dance.

We are a student group acting independently of the University of California. We take full responsibility for our organization and this web site.
