My research centers on the relationship between multiculturalism, citizenship, liberal democracy and human rights, with a particular focus on the implications of cultural diversity for our structures and practices of governance. The primary focus of my research is political theory, which I see as ranging across a wide range of objects, methods of study, and institutional locations. Consequently my research aims to be interdisciplinary, straddling policy, law and theory, employing both historical and philosophical approaches, and connecting contemporary events with their longer-term roots. In examining these questions, I apply my expertise in contemporary political theory, the history of political thought, political economy, domestic and international public law, and the philosophy of social science.
