ACF Newsletter III.4 Dec. 96 Gaius Stern editor Welcome to the final issue of 1996. This issue will contain several tournament results and announcements . In order the articles are Comments on NAQT Invites: Univ. of Texas at Austin NAQT Nationals Brigham Young University ? on Stanford Cardinal Classic Witchita State Berk seeks parner for HS Bowl Wisconsin The BYU migration East Illinois - - - - - - COMMENTS ON NAQT ROUNDS AND REGIONALS For new clubs just starting, NAQT is a good source for quizbowl. It is especially good for campus IMs. Several schools have said NAQT served their campus IMs as well or better than previous years. For die-hard ACF teams, some for the bonuses are a bit easy, but for new players, the range is probably just right. It was somewhat beyond the control of NAQT, but at some Regionals, there were not enough staffers. This caused a small number of problems, and could easily lead to disaster. Host responsibilities should always include providing enough staff. That might mean the The host would have to scratch a team in order to ensure quality. The questions were, on the whole, decently good, however the general knowledge questions have got to go. ("Chicken soup"? You can't be serious.) In future it would be prudent to ensure enough staff is always available. NAQT NATIONALS The NAQT Nationals will be held in Philadelphia the weekend of 24 January. Sixty-four teams from all over the nation will compete, including non-East coast teams like Berkeley, BYU, UT-Dallas, Stanford, and Illinois. The University of Pennsylvania will host this year. NAQT would like to hear from teams interested in hosting next yearUs NAQT sectionals and nationals. If you would like to consider this, please contact David Frazee at dfrazee@umich.edu. STANFORD'S CARDINAL CLASSIC Final word has not been settled, but the Stanford club hopes to run Cardinal Classic the weekend of Feb 7, 1997. Part of the complication is that the Cardinal has always been PresidentUs Day Weekend. This has been frustrated by CBI Regionals who took over the weekend this year. Please contact rogerlee@leland.stanford.edu with questions or comments . BERKELEY IS LOOKING FOR A HS LATIN BOWL PARTNER Berkeley ran a very successful Certamen (Latin quizbowl) this December and is thinking of running another event like this next year. If we could find a partner school willing to write half of the questions, it would be easier for us to produce the event. The events could be run on the same weekend, but need not be. If another team is interested in raising such an event, please contact gaius@uclink2.berkeley.edu before thsi yera ends. We had 30 teams and raised $500.00. BYU MIGRATION EAST BYU has experienced a major turnover in the last two years, sending many players East. Jon G. is at Illinois, Darren R. is at Michigan, Bill A. is at Columbia, Bryce I. is at Duke, and Jen and Jeff S. are both at Princeton. Each of them has had a strong influence on the success of their newly adopted program. Bill has put the new Columbia team on the map, while Jeff and Jen (and child) are the mainstays of Princeton ACF. While they are missed out West, the BYU team has not slowed down in theri absence. This year BYU won Caltech Technophobia, the BYU A team (without Norm) defeated both of the Berkeley H teams at WIT 4, and BYU A also slapped a graduate student Berkeley B team around at NAQT sectionals. We look forward to Perpetual Motion IV and hope that the alums will each write a few questions to maintain the high level of past years. UT AUSTIN POTLUCK BOWL The University of Texas at Austin is hosting its annual invitational tournament, Potluck Bowl (yes, after four years we finally named it) on Jan 18-19. There is *no charge* associated with this tournament (well, we may need about five bucks per team to cover room reservation costs). There will be two different days of play this year. Schools can opt to attend either day of competition. Saturday will be CB-style play (although visual bonuses will be permitted) to give schools a chance to prepare for regionals. Sunday will be ACF-style (with audio and video bonuses permitted). Each day is round robin. Play starts at noon each day. Wade Riddick riddick@jeeves.la.utexas.edu 512/443-2075 WITCHITA STATE The Wichita State University Academic Challenge Club would like to announce that it will be holding its first annual Freeze Your Buzz Off Tournament, January 31 - February 1, 1997. Format will be according to ACF guidelines, with a full round-robin guaranteed, possibly a double. (Depends on the number of teams.) There will also be competition for the "Thumbs on Ice Buzzer Revue," an individual lightning round, with everyone participating. More information can be found at http://www.feist.com/~briareus/wsuacc/freeze.html - John Roushkolb briareus@feist.com BYU PERPETUAL MOTION IV The BYU team is pleased to announce the fourth annual BYU Perpetual Motion Bowl on Jan 31- Feb 1. BYU hosts the oldest tournament in the Rockies and past participants have included some local and some distant teams. We encourage all participants to come and play. Format will be ACF, but we encourage teams to use this tournament as a preparation for up coming Regionals events. This year play will be both Friday and Saturday if turnout is sufficiently high. We encourage teams to submit a round, but a final decision has yet to be made if this will be required. For more information, please contact Craig Harmon at paris@byu.edu. ILLINOIS OBZ The Academic Team at the University of Illinois would like to announce the ON BEYOND ZEBRA tournament. The tournament will be held on the campus here in Champaign-Urbana on Feb 21-22, 1997. The tournament dictators(ie directors) will be Vishnu Jejjala and Alex Corlett. The tournament will require no packet submission from you as we will be writing all the packets. The tournament will be ACF with question difficulty lying between regionals and nationals. At this point we look at doing a full round robin, this may change depending on the number of teams that join us but we will do our best to give you as many games as possible. Martin Stroup m-stroup@students.uiuc.edu WISCONSIN 10th ANNUAL ELVIS A. PRESLEY MEMORIAL Elvis is ALIVE! The University of Wisconsin at Madison is pleased to announce the 10th(!) annual Elvis Aaron Presley Memorial Invitational to take place in Union South on the UW Campus Feb 7th and 8th, 1997. The Elvis is one of the oldest invitationals in the country, with a history of strange goings-on (Elvis has never competed, however). Here are the details: The Elvis will follow a modified ACF format with each round consisting of 24 tossups and their associated bonus questions. The field is limited to 23 teams. Format will be a modified round robin, including both a semi-final and final match. Questions? Call Jeremy Smith at (608)252-0350 or jeremy@doit.wisc.edu
