Mark on Blue Cheer

Dickie Peterson of Blue Cheer recently passed away. Mark had the following to say about the band:
I first heard Blue Cheer in 1981 while under the spell of hardcore. I met this kid from the Bay Area while attending college in Oregon. He was one of about five folks at the school who was even slightly into punk rock. We were all hanging out in his dorm room and he puts Vincebus Eruptum on the turntable and says, "Check out what these crazy hippies did back in the '60s." It nearly split my head in two. Hearing Blue Cheer at that point was almost as important to me as hearing The Stooges for the first time the year before. When Mudhoney started up, Blue Cheer was definitely part of our blueprint.

We're Back

After excessive server downtime, we're back. Fortunately for all parties involved, Mudhoney did essentially nothing in the past month. They played 7/29 at a private party at the Sorrento Hotel in Seattle for 15 minutes until it got broken up by pigs. Steve produced one song on The Spits' fourth self-titled record, which is available next month. Dan had a birthday.

In observance of the site being back online, we're going to enter dangerous new territory - Youtube embedding. Here's 'Tales of Terror' from that hotel gig:

Just a few of the artists he's excited to see: Black Panties ("They cover the Saints!"), Mark Pickerel, the Tripwires, Thee Sgt. Major III, Green Pajamas, Capping Day, McTuff, and Trombone Cake.

Mark on The Melvins

Mark, in the current edition of The Seattle Weekly:

When I first saw them, I think at either [the old Seattle venue] Gorilla Gardens or the Metropolis, they were quite a bit different than what they would become. [It was] very direct and more punk-rock...and they had a different drummer. I would say their influences were more like The Wipers. They had great, catchy songs [and] quickly - almost immediately - became one of the best punk rock bands in town, though they were from Aberdeen and Montesano. Once they changed drummers, all the experimentation started. And it's just been going nonstop for years now, which is great.

4/7/09 The Crocodile. Seattle, WA (15 min)
Also on Bill: The Fastbacks, (various pick-up bands)
Set: Set Me Free, Little Doll, Ramblin' Rose
Notes: This was a party for Kim Warnick of The Fastbacks' 50th birthday. Mark comes out early to sing The Sweet's Set Me Free (off of the first record Mark ever bought) with Kurt Bloch, Mike Musberger, Lulu Gargiulo (all from The Fastbacks) and Jim Sangster (Steve Turner and His Bad Ideas). To close the show, Mark comes back with the same people minus Lulu to do The Stooges' Little Doll and The MC5's Ramblin' Rose. Mark never sang the latter with DKT/MC5 - Wayne Kramer always took the vocals. In attendance are former Fastbacks drummer Dan, and Matt, as well as various other local music notables.

Wednesday, March 25
Show Recap

For want of anywhere else to put it, it goes here: (Thanks to Ben Reese)

3/24/09 "The Justice Tour". The Crocodile Cafe. Seattle, WA
Also on Bill: Tom Morello, Wayne Kramer, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, Ben Shepherd, Steve Earle, Boots Riley, The Blue Scholars
Set: The American Ruse, Kick Out the Jams
Encore: This Land is Your Land
Notes: Mark guests for a few songs at the Seattle Tom Morello "Justice Tour" gig. First he plays two MC5 songs with Wayne Kramer, Kim Thayil, Tom Morello, Ben Shepherd, and Morello's drummer. After that, he gives way for the Soundgarden reunion with Tad Doyle fronting instead of Chris Cornell ("TADgarden"). For the encore, everyone comes out on stage for "This Land is Your Land." Mark takes a verse and has a lyric sheet on the floor of the stage, but can't quite read it. By the time Steve Earle picks it up and holds it closer to Mark, his verse is nearly over. At the end of the song, Morello is exhorting the crowd to "Jump! Jump!" Mark joins in with a bunny hop to take a small poke at the situation.
