This map represents the registered location of approximately 8000 San Francisco businesses. This is less than 10% of the total number of businesses reported on SF’s Open Data portal, but such a large volume of data was not manageable for this project.
As you can see, a significant number of San Francisco businesses are registered out of the region and even across the country. At present, businesses are categorized very coarsely by NAICS code, with blue, red, and green representing codes under 5000, between 5000 and 6000, and over 6000 respectively. Clicking on any of the business icons will open a popup showing the business’ name, address, and NAICS code.
Future improvements on this work will include finding a way to analyze all 84,000 data points reported by the city; refining NAICS code categories; and trimming geographic outliers from the map.
