The Chuck Keeney Era will guide you through the years 1937 to 1957 and give you information about the growing competition in the west, including competition from rivals USC and UCLA. These years will show the champions that Chuck Keeney developed, such as tumbling champions Ross Cunningham and Chuck Thompson, to name just a few. Finally, these years will show you Cal's dominance over the Stanford Gymnastics team.
The Hal Frey Era will take you through Cal's dominating years of the sixties and seventies. During this era Cal captured many NCAA awards including the 1975 NCAA championship. You will learn about the training methods that it took to get them to the top, about the men in charge, Hal Frey and Mas Watanabe, and finally about the men who achieved this great accomplishment. During these years Cal was on top of its game, however, the future was not to become a pleasant one.
The Sho Fukushima Era will take you through the hardships of Cal Gymnastics. Due to cut backs in scholarship money for the gymnastics program, Cal suffered greatly. Many talented gymnasts came out of this era, but as a team in general it was difficult to develop a strong all-around team with very few people. However, the men that did compete during this era, such as ex-assisstant coach Scott Green, Bobby Sundstrom, and Billy Paul, were some of the main reasons for Cal's ability to grow into a future gymnastics power house in the 1990's.
The Barry Weiner Era and Onward will take you through the years of when Cal gymnastics went from an almost extinct team in the mid-1980's to a team filled with promise and expectation. During the 1980's many gymnast felt that they needed a change in coaching style and brought in the expertise of coach Barry Weiner. Since the hiring of Weiner, the gymnastics program at Cal has been growing into the Powerhouse that it was in the 1970's. You will learn of the many new faces on Coach Weiners roster and the hard work it took to get the team to its potential NCAA championship season in 1996 in terms of recruiting and workouts.
