May the thunder strike him down,
My dear Janka -- silly clown!
Bothering me all the day,
But to ask my hand -- ah, nay!

Often I have told him thus:
"Send your go-between to us!
Dad is good -- he'll let me go,
With a heifer as my dot!"

Naughty Janka merrily
Goes on laughing, he-he-he!
And sometimes he mocks me thus:
"Why the hurry, why the fuss?"

Let the rains fall in full spate!
And you, Janka, just you wait!
I'll bring trouble on your head,
And I'll never, never wed!
