So, fine, I was able to stomach it when the Indigo Girls came out
with
their cover of Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl" -- I think they
called it
"Shame On You". They're nice people, I can forgive them.

But then Des'ree (known best for her "You Gotta Be" song) came out
with
her version of El DeBarge's "Rhythm of the Night" (remember that
one?).
She called her song "Life". Just when we thought the '80s were
safely
behind us ;-)

And I was gonna complain about this new recording by Fiona
Apple. It's called, "Across the Universe".
I was gonna complain that it sounded just like a song by the
Beatles. Well, my bad: it turns out that it's actually a cover of
the Beatles' song "Across the Universe". oops :-)

It is kind of neat how you can jump from one song to another, too. Take, for example, "Frosty the Snowman" and "A-tisket A-tasket":
There must have some magic in
That old silk hat they found
For when they put it on his head
He began to dance around
She took it, she took it,
The little yellow basket,
And if she doesn't bring it back
I think that I shall die.
You can do a similar thing with "Jingle Bells" and "Jimmy Crack Corn":
What fun it is
To ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight!
Oh, Jimmy crack corn
And I don't care
Jimmy crack corn
And I don't care
Jimmy crack corn
And I don't care
My master's gone away.
More recently, I found a connection between Buddy Holly's "Blue Days, Black Nights" and "Grandfather's Clock":
My grandfather's clock
Was too large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half
Than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.
Memories of you make me sorry
I gave you reason to doubt me
but now you're gone and I am left here all alone
with blue memories -- I think of you.
If you happen to think of any other song similarities, drop me a line. I'd love to hear about them.
