Presentations...
...a la Jeffrey.
Here are handouts and materials in PDF format from some of my various conference presentations.
So, if you missed one of them, there weren't enough handouts distributed (shame on me), you subsequently lost your handout (shame on you), or if you are just curious (don't be ashamed),...

- DIY Phonetics: it's all in your head, literally.
The sounds of language are made physically with our mouths, meaning that anyone with a mouth and a sense of adventure can explore their secrets. So grab a mirror and follow me on a journey of discovery through Phonemic Awareness, an experiential method of instilling language learners with the tools to self-check and self-correct their pronunciation, producing more natural spoken English and building auditory discrimination for improved listening skills. Then show your students the way to a self-sustaining life of elegant enunciation.
- Dramaturgy and the Art of Classroom Management
The Greeks believed Drama to be a powerful social and personal learning experience, and a live stage performance is truly an amazing synthesis of
playwright, director, actors, and audience. In this workshop we will explore similarities between the stage and the language classroom to re-imagine the roles and relationships between teachers, students, and materials. We will also borrow some stage performance techniques as practical solutions for implementing an exciting new classroom experience.
- Drama in the Classroom
Classroom language learning revolves around the repetition of set dialogue patterns which, while useful, are generally mundane, performed mechanically, and therefore rather boring. Actors struggle with similar difficulties, and in this workshop we will borrow some methods from the actors' rehearsal process to bring those daily conversation activities to life full of meaning and expression.
- "Japanese" in the Classroom: from crutch to springboard...
As the debate on using Japanese in the EFL classroom rages on, both sides often miss opportunities to use cross-linguistic similarities as cognitive springboards to help students engage with pronunciation rules, grammatical word-transformations, and vocabulary acquisition. This workshop explores practical ways to enhance English learning through such cross-linguistic touchstones.
- Keitai Tech
The Keitai: ultimate distraction? or ultimate multimedia weapon!
Explore ways to turn the mobile phone into a powerful tool inside and outside the classroom. This handout also includes some valuable technical details on recording, distributing, and online publishing of educational material for mobile phones.
- Good ALT / Bad ALT
Though you miss out here on the in-class videos of Good ALT / Bad ALT, here is a quick debriefing with recommendations on how to avoid the Bad and be the Good.
- Teaching at Non-Academic SHS
Despite a constant stream of disparaging remarks from teachers, ALTs, academic students, and the community at large, concerning the abilities of students attending Vocational and Non-Academic Senior High Schools, I taught English quite happily at a Technical High School with a level of job satisfaction that kept me re-contracting up to the maximum of 5 years. The first secret to my success was a realization that all those disparaging remarks are based on a profound misunderstanding of how Academic and Non-Academic high school programs actually fit into the overall educational picture and life in general. For some practical advice on getting the most from your Non-Academic students, I offer this outline for your consideration.
- Lesson Planning and Language-Games
Thoughts on taking a more holistic approach to lesson planning for Oral Communications classes by extending your lessons into a series of logically constructed steps to avoid the One-Hit-Wonder syndrome. Some food for thought, flavored with just a dash of Wittgenstein.
- Culture Shock is Good for You
Feeling confused about Culture Shock? In this workshop we will sort through the myths and the realities of the dreaded travelers' bogeyman, and discuss some practical ways to turn this all-natural, organic process from ailment to opportunity. It just might be that Culture Shock is something to be savored, like a glass of red wine or dark chocolate...
- Life as a 2nd-Year ALT
In this workshop we will explore strategies to dig in and get the most out of your life and work after the disorienting temporariness of the first year. With a mixture of existential philosophy, nurturing guidance, and bare-knuckles advice from a seasoned veteran, we will make sure you don't end up leaving Japan empty-handed, empty-headed, or empty-hearted.
