Microtransit in a Transit-First City: Rethinking the Future of On-Demand Transit in San Francisco after Chariot

Though most of my city planning coursework focused on the San Francisco Bay Area due to its proximity to Berkeley and the many opportunities of research it offers, I was (and still am) also very interested in urban issues faced by cities in the Global South. This is the reason why I decided to explore the topic of microtransit, a transportation option widespread in emerging countries, mostly under informal schemes, while it only appeared recently in developed economies, building on the latest digital innovations. Through a case study of San Francisco, I focused on the latter case as part of my master’s thesis, and investigated how on-demand transit services interact with conventional public transit, and whether they compete with or have the potential to support public transportation.
