Berkeley Bicycle Level of Stress Map

Cyclist Comfort in Berkeley, CA

An approximation of the level of traffic stress (LTS) felt by bicyclists throughout Berkeley.

Number of lanes, vehicle speeds, and the presence of bike lanes are the key inputs for LTS along each segment of road. Unsignalized crossings at intersections also contribute to higher stress.

LTS 1 is intended to describe streets that an eight-year-old child could safely use. Hide the high LTS routes (using the layers icon in the bottom left) to see that residential areas form barely-connected islands, separated by commercial streets.

Much more discussion is available at my blog, which describes the data used, as well as the qualitative differences between the various levels of stress.

Use this map at your own risk! It certainly does not correspond perfectly to reality. (And the curvy streets to the north and east are in the hills and tend to be very steep. You've been warned!)
