About the IYSSE
The IYSSE is an international organization of youth and students dedicated to mobilizing young people in a fight against the capitalist system and for the socialist transformation of society.
We have chapters all around the world, including in Germany, Sri Lanka, Australia, France, Canada, and several other countries. In the United States, the IYSSE is active throughout the country.
We maintain that the crisis of human civilization is reduced down to the crisis of revolutionary leadership. Our primary task is the building of a mass movement of students and young people opposed to war, financial dictatorship, and for the socialist retransformation of society.
The education of the future leadership of this movement is essential. Central to our work is the rigorous study of history, politics, and Marxism.
At UC Berkeley, the IYSSE organizes lectures, conferences, film showings and discussion classes on topics of historical, cultural and political significance. Since 2012, we have held hundreds of meetings, discussing and analyzing pressing political and theoretical issues. In 2013-2014, members of the IYSSE taught a for-credit class, called “The Foundations of Classical Marxism.”
Members of our organization routinely contribute to the World Socialist Website, the most widely read socialist newsite in the world. With articles published in over 20 languages, the site is used to coordinate and share the experience of workers and young people internationally. The UC Berkeley Chapter was particularly active in the struggle of BART workers in the 2013 strike.
The IYSSE intervenes regularly throughout the Bay Area and Northern California in workers’ struggles. We have been particularly active in struggles with nurses and medical workers, BART workers, and the bankruptcy of Stockton, CA. In Detroit, the IYSSE has been at the forefront of the fight against water shutoffs, the bankruptcy, and the closure of the Detroit Institute of Arts. In Chicago, the IYSSE played a critical role informing Chicago teachers about the sell-out contract being prepared for them by the pseudo-left leadership of the Chicago Teacher Union. We work in solidarity with the Socialist Equality Party and the International Committe for the Fourth International, the heart of the international struggle against capitalism, founded by Leon Trotsky in 1938.
The International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) at UC Berkeley is an officially recognized campus organization, sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC).
