How to Join

Joining Phi Alpha Theta: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who can join?

All majors are welcome in Phi Alpha Theta! If you have completed “12 hours” (which is equivalent to 4 history classes = 16 units) of history classes, and you have a 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.1 History GPA, you can definitely join in on the good times.

  1. I’m a cool transfer kid. What about the history classes I took away from UC Berkeley?

That’s okay, too. As long as you have the equivalent of 4 history classes, you are eligible. We will need to have a copy of your unofficial transcript from the college(s) you took those history classes in though.

  1. When/where are the meetings?

Meetings are bi-monthly. Check our Facebook for the most up-to-date information about when, where, and all that good stuff about our meetings. If you are a history major, Cassandra, the friendly undergraduate adviser, will forward our reminder emails.

  1. How much are membership dues?

It is $50 for your lifetime membership. All of that goes directly to the national chapter. Semester dues are $10. You MUST pay these dues in order to go to the super duper fun faculty/student dinner at the end of each semester. You can pay these dues via check/cash at meetings (please make checks out to “Phi Alpha Theta”).

  1. Where should I turn in my application?

Please submit your application, your $50 dues via cash or check (please make checks out to “Phi Alpha Theta”), and your unofficial transcript in an envelope either at our meetings or drop them off in the History Department office (3229 Dwinelle).

If you have any questions please email phathberkeley@gmail.com

  1. What do I need to include in my application?

Three things: the actual application, found at http://www.phialphatheta.org/data/memappform.pdf,  your unofficial transcript (don’t forget to click the “print name” option); a check made out to “Phi Alpha Theta” for $50 (if you are brand new).

Make sure you application includes your personal, non-Berkeley email (the national organization requires a non-.edu email) and your current home address. We will only use this information to get you registered and will not share this information with anyone else.

Thank you for your patience during this process. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to phathberkeley@gmail.com

  1. What if I am in the process of taking my four history classes?

Unfortunately, we will not be able to send your application to the national chapter until we see 4 history classes with letter grades next to them on your transcript.

Make sure to check out the national website at http://phialphatheta.org/
