We interrupt your regularly scheduled programing to highlight a very special Phi Alpha Theta event! We are glad to announce that Edward Rickford will be joining us to discuss his series The Serpent and the Eagle (Tenochtitlan Trilogy), and how to write historical fiction with a history degree. Edward Rickford is a prize-winning, self-published historical fiction author! The Serpent and the Eagle series is set in the ancient city of Tenochtitlan in 1519, the novel tells a thrilling tale of Motecuhzoma and his encounters with foreign forces. We invite all to come to the conference on November 25th 7-8:30pm and check-out his work!

PhAT Movie Night Yo!

[Image Description: A black and white cameo of Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsberg emerges from a light pink background. A gold cartoon crown sits above her head. The words "On the Basis of Sex" appear beside her in fancy gold lettering. Below that, grey cursive text reads: "Come watch On the Basis of Sex, an RBG biopic starring Felicity Jones, with your favorite Phi Alpha Theta officers. When: Thursday November 7; Where: Dwinelle 251."]

Come watch On the Basis of Sex with us this Thursday the 7th!
Based on your votes we’ll be showing the RBG biopic in Dwinelle 251 this Thursday from 7-9 (Please try to arrive before 7 so we can watch as much of the movie as possible). Remember, you don’t have to be a Phi Alpha Theta member or even a history major to attend this event. Bring your friends! Bring your enemies! Bring the ghost of former supreme court justice Antonin Scalia! Or actually maybe don’t do that… We look forward to seeing you there!

Grad Panel

We’re happy to be hosting a panel this Thursday to offer advice to undergraduate history students (and anyone else interested in grad school)! The panel will feature Berkeley history professors and graduate students willing to answer your questions. And though Halloween is approaching, I promise it won’t be too spooky… Boo!

A sheet ghost with a wide-open mouth that makes it look like he's going "Oooooooo" emerges from a grey background. A thought bubble above his head reads, "I still don't know what I'm going to do with my afterlife!!" The top of the poster asks in big green Goosebumps letters, "Life after undergrad too spooky?" The rest of the text is in a typewriter font. It reads: Then you should come to PhAT's grad panel, featuring a selection of history professors and grad students ready to share advice about grad school and the academic world! When: October 24, 7-9 PM. Where: Dwinelle 251. Why: I've been trapped in PhAT's social media accounts for 7 years and the only way to set me free is to attend this event.

Game Night!!

A black flyer for Phi Alpha Theta's Game Night with white and gold details. The flyer reads, "Come join Phi Alpha Theta Thursday the 26th for our second meeting of the year! We'll be playing board games at Games of Berkeley on Durant Ave from 6pm to 8pm." There's an outline of a set of gold dice and the Venus de Milo statue with a speech bubble that reads, "I'm still trying to win my arms back from last year!*" That asterisk is in reference to a statement at the bottom of the poster that reads, "*There will be no gambling of arms or anything else at PhaT's game night."
Hey, guys! We’ll be hosting our second event on Thursday the 26th at Games of Berkeley. Come by around 6pm to hang out and play some games!

All you have to do is walk to the game room in the back of the store and we should be all set up. The store has a library of games to choose from. The Phi Alpha Theta crew will be hanging out between 6pm and 9pm, but you can drop by anytime during that period. Hope to see you there, folks!

History Trivia Night 2019!

A green poster advertising Phi Alpha Theta's Historical Trivia Night, which will occur on Thursday the 12th at 8pm. The event will take place in room 106 Wheeler Hall. The poster also includes a text box that reads "Come test your mettle at our History Trivia Night!" Underneath that is a picture of a king and his retinue knighting a young man. As he does so, he proclaims, "For slaying the fearsome Trivia Dragon, I hereby knight you Sir Alexander Trebek!"
If you haven’t seen it on our Facebook or Instagram already, here is the official announcement of PhAT’s first meeting of Fall 2019!

The event will take place this Thursday the 12th! We’ll be playing a Jeopardy-esque game of historical trivia. As with all our events, this game will be open to students of all majors. Bring your friends! Bring your roommates! And good luck everyone!

Fallon Burner
Vice President

Fallon Burner is a third-year History major with a concentration in the Atlantic World and would like to acknowledge the Ohlone people on whose land she is able to earn her degree. She is focused on balancing main-stream historical narratives by re-focusing the lens on the perspective of Indigenous people and women, particularly the Huronne-Wendat people of Canada and the tribes which were part of the Powhatan Confederacy in Virginia. Having grown up in Yorktown, Virginia, history has always played a huge role in her life. Her first career was as an actor/singer/dancer, choreographer, and circus artist, and she still likes to dance, act, and sing when she gets a chance! If you attended any History Department events in the last year you’ve probably seen her in her unofficial capacity as undergrad department events maven.

Secretary

Geraint (pronounced Jer-rant) is a third-year History and Global Studies double major. He hopes to go either into International Relations or become a history professor. His favorite time and place to study is the Roman Empire (Ancient Greece being a close second), with a dash of modern geopolitics on the side—although he will voraciously read anything on any time or place. He also particularly loves winning historical strategy games (electronic and tabletop), and generally being a nerd. When not buried in schoolwork, he can be found buried in sci-fi/fantasy novels or looking for good places to eat throughout the Bay.
