My buddy and I went to Pakistan for three weeks in June 2006. Why
Pakistan? The mountains are huge and nobody goes there, that's
why. We correctly guessed that State Department travel warnings
are total paranoia and we were totally safe. We only saw three or
four other Americans outside the airport, but there were a decent
number of tourists from other less-paranoid countries. I freely
told everyone where I was from, but no one ever got upset at me for
that, in fact the
maddest any Pakistani ever got at me was when I tried to tell them pro
wrestling is fake. It's just a country full of bearded dudes that
don't like George W. Bush--like looking in a mirror. We trekked
in the Northern Areas for two weeks and when we got tired of getting
rained and snowed on, we visited Peshawar, the Khyber Pass border with
Afghanistan, and Lahore.
