Concrete Solutions

  • The Concrete Solutions track focuses specifically on the concrete sequence of the project. Engineers are tasked with creating a schedule, estimate, and site logistics plan to tackle a variety of concrete focused issues. There is heavy emphasis on pour plans, site logistics, and labor rates. Team members are tasked with presenting to judges as a self-perform entity of a general contractor.

Design-Build

  • Given a Request for Proposal from an Owner, the team works together as a single Design-Build entity to develop a design, estimate, schedule, and site logistics for the project. Members will be assigned roles such as Project Executive, Project Manager, Preconstruction Manager, Superintendent, Principal Architect, and Lead Designer. The team will need to present their proposal and convince the Owner that the proposed plan is worth the Owner’s contract.

Commercial

  • Commercial competition is a design-bid-build contract type. The problem statement is directly applicable to the construction industry, dealing with real-world problems as industry professionals previously saw them. As a member of the Commercial team, one will gain experience in the most common contract method in the construction industry and meet professionals that will assist in developing one’s knowledge.

Heavy Civil

  • Heavy Civil construction involves highways, dams, ports, and bridges, and overpasses. The team mainly focuses on government infrastructure. We work with the plans to produce an estimate, schedule and site plan. Examples of projects the team has worked on are: Las Vegas Strip land bridge, South Tahoe highway renovations, and a bridge reconstruction in Santa Barbara

Integrated Project Delivery

  • Present and defend a new form of construction contracting where owner, prime-constructor, and prime-designer will be coordinated. This delivery method will integrate people, systems, business structures, and practices to optimize project results..

Mixed-Use

  • Mixed Use will assess the team’s understanding of key responsibilities for Project Engineers in our industry including prob estimating, scheduling, plan reading, bid analysis, site logistics, and quantity takeoffs. Mixed Use construction typically involves a bottom story for commercial use, followed by residential apartments in the above floors. Successful teams will display a thorough understanding of the project and provide well thought out solutions to subjects and problems issued throughout the competition.

Preconstruction

  • Preconstruction is the engineering and planning that occurs before the construction of a building begins! We are given the description of a building and must create a complete schedule, estimate, and site logistics plan to present to the “owner” (PCL Construction), along with schedule and cost analysis of addendums that are released the day of competition.

Project Management

  • Project Management is highly focused on the details of construction management. The competition involves reviewing all contracts and documents for the project, including all subcontractors and owner contracts. The main goal of the Project Management team is to review all aspects of a given project and conduct a risk assessment for the overall project.

Sustainability

  • Sustainability’s main objectives are to understand how sustainability is integrated into construction projects and to recognize the importance of minimizing our negative impact on the environment. By becoming familiar with LEED, Living Building Challenge, and Envision cred- its, we can thoroughly analyze con- struction projects and propose design changes, comparisons, or mitigation procedures etc. The long-term goal is for all future projects to achieve net zero energy.

Virtual Design and Construction

  • VDC is the virtual design and construction team. We work with Building Information Modeling (BIM) software programs to help guide construction and identify clashes before they come up in the field. VDC focuses on three aspects: 3D Logistics and Coordination, 4D Scheduling, and 5D Estimation. For each focus, we learn different softwares to solve the different problems.
