The Rio Grande

"Please show me your greatest treasure," the conquistador asked his Indian host, who was heaping the Spaniards with gifts of food and cotton blankets. The explorers hoped to find gold.

The Indian motioned for the conquistador and his men to follow. On the banks of the Rio Grande they stopped. "This is the most precious thing in life," the Indian said through an interpreter. He gestured towards the waters of the Rio Grande, glistening gold in the pre-sunset light.
