You Better Belieze It!

During the winter of 2016, I made some of my best memories in Central America learning large animal veterinary practices. Two weeks in Belize taught me many things: big bugs actually don’t scare me, medicine is very different in different parts of the world, and veterinary medicine is such a fantastic field to get into. I’m not sure what it was about Belize, perhaps the sheer contrast it has from everything I’m used to – bustling people, Uber pools all over the place, or the tangible stress of living in the bay area – but I never once woke up and felt the pangs of work or anxiety come over me. Sure, I was doing much harder work than I was used to like wrangling sheep and goats or castrating pigs, but there is something about manual labor that gets you out of your own mind and actually soothes your soul. Or maybe that’s just me, haha!

Between the many valuable veterinary skills I learned from suturing to administering injections, I learned more about myself and what I want to strive for in the future. I want to positively impact animals’ lives in some way and therefore help their human counterparts in the process.
