Ok, sumimasen usdragonfly-san! Here is a clue for you:

It involves a sport.

thanks for the clue but just outta curiousity , what does sumimasen mean?

Hmmm nine lines. Does it have anything to do with baseball?

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...

usdragonfly: in this context, sumimasen means "i'm sorry" .
Kazn: no, it isn't to do with baseball.

One more clue: It is a sport that doesn't have a large following in the United States.

I assume there is a following, but not much of one. How about:
rugby
soccer (we have pro teams, but most people don't care)
cricket

Capture the flag? In the context of first person shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament... red and blue...

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...
Post by KenYonRuKu on Feb 15th, 2004, 3:40pm
Nope. It has nothing to do with computers, it is a bona fide, professional participation sport. Think about what colours could be associated with the musicians I listed.

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...
Post by Speaker on Feb 15th, 2004, 9:14pm
Well, I would guess [hide] Othello or Go. Because of the colors Black and White. But they are not sports exactly. The only other colors I come up with are purple for Hendrix's "Purple Haze." But, nothing for Fleetwood Mac. [/hide]

So, this is a real sport with sweating and exercise, not like darts or chess, right?

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...
Post by John_Gaughan on Feb 15th, 2004, 10:35pm
:: [hide]Hendrix was black, obviously, although Purple Haze does come to mind. Fleetwood Mac was a bunch of white guys, but their greatest hits album is green. Hmmm... I don't know...[/hide] ::

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...
Post by KenYonRuKu on Feb 16th, 2004, 10:25am
Speaker: It isn't Othello or Go, or Darts or Chess. However, it is a sport that isn't really sweaty or very vigorous in terms of physical exertion. And you are on the right lines for Hendrix, but purple isn't the correct colour...

John: The colours have nothing to do with the colour of the skin of the various musicians.

Keep going though, you are getting close!

Hmmm:
[hide]Tom Jones:Black Betty or Green green grass of  home.
       Elvis: Blue suede shoes?
Rolling stones: Brown sugar or Paint it black?
       Donovan: Mellow Yellow
       Henry Mancini: Pink Panther (theme)
       Fleetwood Mac: Silver springs
       Hendrix: Red house
These are all colours I could find. And now I'm totally confused. I'm not a sports' fan, U know.[/hide] Help!

I agree, this is confusing.

Maybe it is Sumo.

Could it be [hide] darts? I know that a dartboard has alternating colours, and the center colours are usually different from the outside, so maybe it's counting them down a row or column or something.  I'm not exactly sure what colours are on most dartboards though. [/hide]

Dart boards are usually black and white. Bullseye is red, with a yellow circle around it. I do not think this fits the riddle, however.

What do the colours have to do with this sport?

I still don't have an answer, but a dart board is black and white and red and green.

I think it must be a sport involving two people or teams that alternate taking turns (this gives us the long repitition of Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac). No, I have no idea, ignore everything here, except for this part telling you to ignore everything (also ignore that last part about telling you not to ignore the part about ignoring).

If Fleetwood Mac did not appear at the end I would say the names represented pitchers in a baseball game. But in baseball, once a player is swapped out, he cannot enter the game again.

AFAIK, Billiard is the "general" name of many games, and snooker is a specific game. Hence, billiard and snooker are not different games.

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...

Isn't billiard a game? KenYonRuKu said that it's a sport... then we could say that chess is a sport too... but I don't get it. Isn't billiard played with a white ball? And what colour is Fleetwood Mac?

Am I just thick, I do not see (after reading the information on the site suggested by Raven) how the riddle can be answered in this way.

Anybody care to elaborate, or give obtuse hints that might enlighten this humble dim one.

Okay, I can see there are still some questions about this riddle and my answer.
Like most of my riddles, this one could have been refined a couple more times before being posted. But if you look closely you will see why “snooker” is the intended answer.

The riddle has fifteen repetitions of Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac.
That’s fifteen instances of the colors red and white (‘Red House’ since he stated it wasn’t ‘Purple Haze’ and ? ? ?, I think he might have been thinking about Jefferson Airplane’s ‘White Rabbit’ song title)

Then he follows that with Donovan, Tom Jones, Rolling Stones, Elvis, Henry Mancini and Fleetwood Mac again. This last bit confused me almost as much as the many repetitions of Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac.

But if you look at the colors involved, it has already been stated that:

1. Hendrix = ‘Red House’ = Red X 15 instances
2. Donovan = ‘Mellow Yellow’ = Yellow
3. Tom Jones = ‘Green Green Grass of Home’ = Green
4. Rolling Stones = ‘Brown Sugar’ = Brown
5. Elvis = ‘Blue Sued Shoes’ = Blue
6. Henry Mancini = ‘Pink Panther theme music’ = Pink
7. And who the h*** knows about Fleetwood Mac? = White, the Cue ball and Black, the seven ball.

Now, I have never played nor do I know the rules of snooker, but if you read the rules of the game, or better yet, just look at the table layout, they have the ball colors and numbers all set up in front of you.

From the rules: Point values for object balls: red-1 (there are 15), yellow-2, green-3, brown-4, blue-5, pink-6, black-7

I suspect that Fleetwood Mac ball is meant as the Cue ball placing the colored balls in the pockets, this analogy falls apart when we leave the red balls and move into the other colors of object balls. I also guess that Fleetwood Mac is the black ball at the end, or closing the game by sinking the Cue ball?! Also, when trying to understand the rules of the game, it looks like you don’t have to play all the red balls first, but maybe that is one variant to the game?

Anyway, if someone comes up with a better answer, please post me forthwith or if 'KenYonRuKu' refutes my answer, I hope he will provide us with the correct and intended answer  ;)

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...
Post by raven on Mar 1st, 2004, 8:51pm
DeMark, I do have to question those same points.
Is snooker a 'sport'?
What color is Fleetwood Mac? :-/

Snooker may be considered a Gentleman's Sport I suppose...
As far as Fleetwood Mac is concerned, I really don't feel like doing any more research on this riddle to try to justify the riddle itself ;)

However, looking at all the rest of the evidence presented, I totally stick by my answer. For more details I guess we have to go to the source of the riddle...

Peace,

~Raven

Okay, I'm off to make riddles...

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...
Post by Speaker on Mar 1st, 2004, 9:18pm
Well, Raven, your answer seems to give most of the elements a role to play. And maybe it is a certain version of snooker. But, my reading of the rules seems that the color should go something like:

Red, yellow, red, green, red, brown, red, blue, red, pink, red, black, red, red, red, red, red, red, red, red, red.
This is assuming that no shots are missed by the first person to shoot (for a total of 42 points). The colors can be shot in any order, as long as there are still reds on the table. Once all the reds are down, the colors need to be shot in the order: yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, black. However, in this situation, the black ball is not sunk, it stays on the table until a foul occurs.

If the opponent is allowed to play, then any colored balls that were put down are pulled back up. So, the color pattern would be completely random (or facsimile thereof).

I just read the rules, so maybe I am misunderstanding.  :P

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...
Post by raven on Mar 1st, 2004, 9:33pm
Speaker,
You probably are correct about the rules. I didn't spend much time with the rules.

Honestly, I was tired of pounding my head against this riddle and it seemed others were too. So I spent a little time looking into 'sports' ( don't really get into sports ). This seemed like the best fit, followed far behind by 'Bull Fighting'.

I don't know if this is a variant or if I'm missing something or what? But it does seem to have the elements and that's more than I can say about any of my other guesses.

Maybe we'll never know...

 :'(

Yeah, I think your answer is correct. When KenYonRuku comes back we can have a discussion, vent our spleens, work up a lather, give a talking to, blow our tops, ad nauseam.

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...
Post by BNC on Mar 2nd, 2004, 6:13am
When you play the game profecionally, you play with 15 red balls. You have to pocket the red ones first. After each red, you may pocket a color ball (whichever one you want). If the color ball is pocketed, it is re-placed on the table (the red balls remain off the table). Each color ball has a value.

Optimal play is red-balck-red-black... until all reds are gone (black=7 points). Then, you continoue with the rest of the colors in order.

The riddle describes an optimal game.

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...
Post by Speaker on Mar 2nd, 2004, 5:46pm
Okay, I have never played, so sorry to KenYonRuku for any maligning. But, when I read the rules it seemed to mean that the colored balls stay down until the end of the shooter's turn (which ends when he fouls or misses), then the colored balls are brought back up and put on their spots. The second player then must sink a red, then a color alternating between.

So, you mean that everytime the black ball is sunk it is immediately pulled back up and spotted? The player that sunk it then shoots a red and then shoots the black again.

Title: Re: What on earth is going on here?...
Post by towr on Mar 3rd, 2004, 1:42am
There are 15 reds, and 6 colored. So it would be hard to alternate between them if the colored ones weren't brought back. Because the colored balls would be depleted long before the reds.

Yes, that's right. The red balls open the way to collect points by pocketing the color balls. If fact, if you'll ever get to watch the world championship, you'll see the players usually pocketing either black or pink after each red (unless it's impossible, which almost never happen with the really good ones).

Off topic : Failure to spot the colored ball after you sink it results in 7 points to the other player(s). This is what makes the game so fun. Get my brother good and drunk and I can come away with a few hundred points in 'forgotten respots'.

Hello again everyone...

Apologies for my disappearance - it was not intended for dramatic effect or to test your patience. the truth is i have started a new job and haven't had any time to come on this site. so, please accept my apologies.

as for the riddle, yes, it is about snooker. more specifically, it is about a maximum break (or optimum game as BNC said).

raven got the colours right - except that Fleetwood Mac is black (Black Magic Woman).

Nice to see such a fiery debate, and again, i apologise for my absence.

Good work by the way,
