Title: Letter Sequence Puzzle
Post by KenYonRuKu on Feb 5th, 2004, 1:50pm

SY = DO, ??, GR, TL, YE, ??
RE = ??, TN, TE, ??, FY, OY, AL

1.What do the letters represent?
2.What letters are missing?

Ok, here is a clue:

[hide] It is something to do with the UK [/hide]

Sorry, I am a dumb American, I don't understand British riddles :-)

And I am a dumb Japanese...  :)

Calling all UK puzzlers! (and those from elsewhere who know a little about the UK...)

Pit your wits against this letter sequence puzzling opportunity...

Please allow me to give you another piece of the riddle:

SY = DO, ??, GR, TL, YE, ??
GY = OE
RE = ??, TN, TE, ??, FY, OY, AL
TN = TS, LL
PN = GE, TS, TH, DY

Does that help any? What can these letters represent...?

A little more help...

SCY = DNO, FLE, GFR, TBL, YTE, DFR
GLY = OSE
RME = LDE, TGN, TME, MRR, FOY, OPY, AKL
TDN = TDS, LKL
PBN = GYE, TDS, TEH, DDY

Would anyone like to hazard a guess?

Here is a guess, and it is hazardous.

They are abbreviations of the names of stations on the underground (chikatetsu) in London. The first letter group represents the name of the line, and the following groups are the station names.

This is really a stab in the dark, so maybe they are not subway trains, maybe regular trains.

Your guess is imaginative and insightful, but unfortunately it is not the right answer. Keep trying though!  ;)

Thought it might have been postcodes before you started adding letters... Which started to make it look like airports/aerodromes. Highly unlikely.
Can't remember enough rhyming slang for it to be helpful.
Doesn't seem to be anything to do with royal family.
Last ditch attempt... rivers and towns?

Not sure, but I think it might have something to do with various countries and cities within the countries.  For example, SCY could be Sicily, and RME could be Rome.  FLE could possibly be Florence.  This assumes that the abbreviation is the first letter, some middle letter, and the last letter of the citie's name.

Of cource, all of these are in Italy, not the UK, but it's the best guess I have.  I'm not familiar enough with European cities to even guess what the others might be.  This doesn't fit the equal sign very well either as far as I can tell...  so there you have it.

I have a new challenge to offer: What has happened to KenYonRuKu? He appeared for a short while, left many confounding puzzles, and has not been heard from since.

Its possible that school started, thus KenYonRuKu found it harder to come and play.

Or having finally made it to junior member status (oh glorious day :)) has taken a break.

Then again, if a puzzle of yours is answered too quickly, or not answered at all, it is a little dispiriting.

True, but KenYonRuKu was very active for a short time, and then suddenly stopped completely. I hope it is something like a loss of internet connection, and not serious.

when you put it like that... I whole-heartedly agree. [hide]
Although, it reminds me of a japanese girl I befriended once.
Torrid emailing, then nothing[/hide]...[hide] No warning, no petering out.[/hide]
enough drivel.

Hello everyone,

Many apologies for my disappearance... I have started a new job and I don't seem to have much free time at the moment. To set your minds at rest, I have not fallen foul of the law or come into hardship, I have merely been too tired to wax lyrical with you guys. Sumimasen...

See you again soon,

KenYonRuKu
