;) The answer is Darkness. If you watch Life is Beautiful (an Italian foreign film) it has that riddle in it.

Off topic: I saw Life is Beautiful in the theater many years ago, and there was a very awkward audience moment that has stuck well in my memory. I was wondering if anyone could relate. The moment had to do with the scene where the German officer asks someone who knows Italian to translate his barking of the concentration camp laws for the other prisoners. Guido steps to the task, and makes a mockery of his speech by mistranslating it into the rules of a game for the amusement of his 4-year old son (e.g. along the lines of: "we are here to win points ... the first to get 1000 points will win a tank"). I found this very humorous, to see Guido spin such a dire situation 180 degrees, if just for a little while -- and to see the camera switch to Guido's son, who is joyful and amazed to hear the "rules." So I cracked up laughing, and so did a few others in the audience. Yet to my wonder, I then noticed that some others were weeping at the same time. Then I felt awkward ... I didn't know whether I should've been laughing or crying. There were a couple scenes like this in the movie that divided the audience.

I think that is the very reason it was such a good movie. You can take so much different away from it depending upon who you are, or where you are in your life.

One explanation put forward for the development of humor is that it is a device for coping with painful situations. While I do not believe this is entirely so, it has some element of truth to it.

This helps explain why some see the scene as humorous, while others cry. The humor is a means by which Guido alleviates the suffering of his mates. You reacted to the humor. Others reacted to the suffering with a different coping mechanism: tears.
