The Elite Group

This is a group of famous people.   Even if they are always seen together, none has ever met each other.  There are four men in this elite group.  If you could talk to some members of this group, they would not even be aware of the group’s existence.

Who are they?

I think they are (hint)[hide]GW, TJ, TR and AL, and can often be seen at MR in SD[/hide].

Yes - This is Maryl's Rock group, whom I did indeed visit this summer. Security was extra tight, since they were celebrating a birthday.

I don't think that answer is correct. George Washington must have met Thomas Jefferson.  A quick Google search didn't give me a specific instance, but they evidently lived in the same house at one point, and there are many cases of them being in Philadelphia and Virginia at around the same time.

True - sorry I missed that. But since Lupin has already agreed with Wowbagger, I would say it is the puzzle itself that is wrong, not the answer.

Thank you for not blaming the puzzler himself, Icarus, but the puzzle should have read "some" instead of "none" ... indeed it is the puzzler's mistake.

I'm glad I got this one right.  :)
Maybe I should have looked up when they lived, but I was quite sure it was the answer Lupin had in mind, so I didn't bother.  :-/

Impressive, getting the right answer when the question is wrong.  I would also dispute the statement that they are "always seen together" and if I could talk to them they would not be aware of the group's existence.  If they were able to communicate with modern people, I'd expect them to know of the group.

How about this variation:  What group of four famous people has the same last names as wowbagger's group of four but is not the same group.  They are often seen together- more frequently than the group given by wowbagger.

Ah, but if the condition is false, the statement is true, regardless of the truth of the predicate.

As for "always seen together", George, who always puts himself forward, eclipses the rest in some people's view.

This is a challenge. They are real people?
Staring the facts in the face has never forced me to consider them while answering a riddle. If these four famous fellows are female in persuasion, then how about four US Navy Ships. Okay, so the first names are not different.

More, later.

I don't think so. Would they really be seen together more frequently than the first group?

I think they are. In fact, I think SWF's group is [hide]almost the same, except for FR instead of TR[/hide]. They are often seen together because they are [hide]portrayed on US coins[/hide].

The shame!! [hide]That a German has to remind me of whose faces are on US currency! :-[/hide]

I must hide my face, but I can't - hide tags don't work on smileys! :P

That is the correct answer wowbagger, and it is consistent with the question too.

Then you would agree that the following is a true statement:  "If the question were correctly worded, the answer would not be GW, TJ, TR, and AL."

The shame!

An understandable oversight if we may assume you deal only with large denomination bills.

Actually, my first idea was that it had to do with banknotes.
