If you meant light as the answer, I would have to disagree; but in some instances, hanging a light over it helps you to appreciate it's beauty more.

I don't know about the intended answer, but another possibility is the obvious [hide]paint[/hide].

I was thinking along the lines of [hide] dyes[/hide] in general.

You know when I first heard this riddle, my guess was light too, but then they told me it was [hide]paint[/hide]. Guess sticking with your instincts pays off.

I agree. Paint really has not been around as long as dyes, and a dye is a more general term. The only dye I see right now is in my clothes, but I guess one sees clothes everyday... so I would hope...

I don't know for sure, but I believe you have that backwards. Cave paintings have been found that are far older than any dyed cloth we have.

I suppose it depends on what exactly you define as a "dye" vs a "paint". In some situations, the distinction is blurry.
