Title: My first is not a pro Post by maryl on Apr 24th, 2003, 4:01pm My first is not a pro; He manipulates the weak. My second is a "subject" even mad men find unique. Many men have wrestled with my all, yet it challenges everybody-both big and small. |

Title: Re: My first is not a pro Post by wowbagger on Apr 28th, 2003, 6:44am At long last I have an idea: [hide]conscience[/hide]? If it's what you looked for, I'd be interested in knowing whether its "second" is really easy to come up with for you native speakers. |

It is a funny word, I was wondering how tricky it might be to figure out. I'm sure it's easier on this end. |

Title: Re: My first is not a pro Post by Icarus on Apr 28th, 2003, 6:12pm It certainly isn't any easier because of pronunciation! I came up with it immediately because the phase "Men have wrestled with ..." rang a bell. And "con" fit well with the first two lines. But it took me quite a while to notice how it fit the 3rd and 4th lines, since the pronunciation is so different. It does bring up the question of whether "conscience" is a two or three syllable word. Around here, it is usually spoken in two, but in some dialects it might be considered three. |

It is listed as having two syllables in my dictionary. |

Title: Re: My first is not a pro Post by Icarus on Apr 29th, 2003, 4:19pm Oh - well if you are going to go by the dictionary... Personally, I prefer to make up my own rules! There is so much more freedom that way. ;) |

Title: Re: My first is not a pro Post by aero_guy on Apr 30th, 2003, 1:42pm Actually, this is a good point. There are only two syllables in the word, but the first syllable on its own is a two syllable word. This is what took me so long ot get this, I was looking for a single syllable word for "my second". Tricky. |

Title: Re: My first is not a pro Post by Speaker on May 1st, 2003, 8:47pm My first guess was Conceit. And, defining mad men as people with unusual behavior, then they just may find Seat(s) unique. And, don't men wrestle with conceit. (women also) But, the other answer seems better :-/ |
