Title: Words ending with "i"? Post by BNC on Aug 18th, 2005, 2:03pm I was told there are no English words ending with the letter "i". Is it true? |

Title: Re: Words ending with "i"? Post by Icarus on Aug 18th, 2005, 5:02pm "I" certainly can think of one... Perhaps another will come to mind the next time I ski. |

Title: Re: Words ending with "i"? Post by Three Hands on Aug 18th, 2005, 5:03pm There are several pluralised forms of words ending in -us (a hangover from the latin origins)such as foci, loci, hippopotomi, etc. For non-pluralised words ending in i, however, the best I can think of at the moment are somewhat fishy - scampi, calamari and sushi, for example ::) So, yes, there are English words ending with i. Just not many that I can think of... [e] excluding ones Icarus just posted... *hits own head* [/e] |

Title: Re: Words ending with "i"? Post by Noke Lieu on Aug 28th, 2005, 6:54pm and over here we have something a friend of mine called "grass-monsters"- too everyonelse that's 'bindii' (Soliva pterosperma)- a weed that produces very sharp seed cases that stick in you feet, or hands or anything that it touches really. Really hurts walking barefoot across a patch of it. Oh and whilst not really English there is also the bindi (http://www.kamat.com/kalranga/women/bindi.htm) |

Title: Re: Words ending with "i"? Post by otter on Feb 1st, 2006, 5:13am I was in Cincinnati riding in the back of a taxi contemplating whether one could ski in Hawaii or Fiji. Being hungry, I decided on a broccoli and zucchini salad. The scent of frangipani wafted across the room. Ennui was just about to set in when I noticed the fungi on the photo of the girl in a bikini. Looking up, I noticed a member of the glitterati rummaging through her etui and I wondered if she was the actress in Gigli. |

A search on Onelook (http://www.onelook.com), using the wildcard *i will result in a plethora of words (but Onelook limits you to the first 1,000 matches). Even selecting the Common Words option exceeds 1,000 words. |

Title: Re: Words ending with "i"? Post by towr on Feb 1st, 2006, 6:36am I used a word list, I had to manually filter out a lot of crap though. And seems like one-look could do with some filtering as well.. Quote:

No question. But still a large number of words ending in 'i'. It would be interesting to filter only those words which are actually English, in the sense that they are not foreign language words that have found use in English, e.g. fettucini, spaghetti, canoli, etc. |

Title: Re: Words ending with "i"? Post by towr on Feb 1st, 2006, 8:41am What is actual english? Should we remove all words originating from french and from latin? I doubt there would be much english left :P |

Bad wording, perhaps, on my part. In looking at the original post, I was thinking about words ending in "i" that English "borrows" from other languages, primarily Italian. Borrowing them doesn't make them, in and of themselves, "English" words. Rather, IMHO, they are Italian words that have found a home in English. For example, fettuccini is used in English, but is Italian by birth. Scungilli, on the other hand, is an Italian-American corruption of the Neapolitan word, sconciglio and the argument could be made that it is, therefore, an "English" word. Similarly, using the phrase ¿Que Pasa? in New York City or London or Toronto, doesn't make it "English". It's still Spanish. I hope that clarifies my thinking... |
||||
Title: Re: Words ending with "i"? Post by towr on Feb 1st, 2006, 1:33pm It makes it a bit clearer, however I disagree with it. Especially in cases where english otherwise simply doesn't have a word for it. What would you call fettuccini if not that? At least half the words in english were at some point borrowed. Some have been bastardized a bit over the years. But after a while I think it's justified to say they are english. |

Title: Re: Words ending with "i"? Post by Icarus on Feb 1st, 2006, 7:12pm There is the question of exactly when a word ceases to be a "foreign" word used because one is quoting a foreign concept, and becomes an english word. "Kimono" is an excellent example. Today, few would dispute the word being a part of the english language. The garment it describes is widely available in english speaking countries. 60-70 years ago, on the other hand, while most urban english speakers knew the word, few would have considered it to be a part of the english language itself. As time goes on, I expect it to gradually lose more and more of its Japanese identity, until eventually, only those interested in word origins will even know where it came from, much like many french words in english today. ________________________________ While I consider such words as fettuccini as fair game for this question, I do hold reservations about proper nouns such as Hawaii, Bernoulli, and Yuri. |

Title: Re: Words ending with "i"? Post by towr on Feb 2nd, 2006, 1:40am yuri is also a (sub)genre of manga ;D I suppose it's only really prevalent in english in otaku (manga/anime/japan geeks) terminology though. In how much ought there be an exception for terminology and jargon? I'm sure most english speakers haven't a clue about what acetylcholinesterase is, or nucleus accumbens. Or other terms specific to a few disciplines. |
