And after some time in an attempt he tried doing it to find the answer. This is why he did this.

Or maybe you forced him to do that !!

Maybe he wanted to see if there is any scratch on the phone which he could not see in sunlight

I fail to see what situation that is.
But that explains why you said "hand lamp" and not "pocket lamp". It's because he doesn't have a pocket but he has a hand.
