A man was captured for all eternity. The man then thanks his captor and walks away.
His captor was human.

What happened?

It was Chuck Norris.

He just waited for eternity to end.

While Chuck Norris would be around once eternity ended, his captor wouldn't be.

I suppose I should add that his captor is human.

Well, ok, what about: The man died and was captured by an angel to be taken to Heaven. He then walked away in the vast plains of clouds of Paradise.

The point seems to be the protagonist outlives the captor. I don't really see the point in speculating why a man would thank a dead person or whether there was a significantly more lenient replacement captor, etc.

Alternatively, the police could have finally cracked the case and discovered the captor and our protagonist both alive; the captor went to jail and the protagonist thanked the captor for supper.

This was my best riddle, but now is merely one of my best riddles. The tree I posted in the What am I? category are probably tougher.
