Sondra is celebrating her birthday with her oldest friends, Jennifer and Ashley. On her previous birthday, Sondra liked Jennifer’s gift (http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=what_am_i;action=display;num=1236556624;start=0#0). However, that is about to change. Sondra gives Ashley a big hug for her present. Jennifer’s present was exactly what she wanted for her birthday, but she wasn’t glad. Why not?

Sondra is very pragmatic. It is soon Ashley's birthday, so Sondra asked Jennifer for something that she could then give to Ashley. But now Ashley is present. She would recognize the present (re-wrapped in the same paper). So Sondra is stuck with a present for which she has no use, she has to come up with another present for Ashley, and she has to pretend she is delighted with the present.

I don't know how you come up with such twisted motives.
