Title: The Two Sons
Post by daemonturk on Feb 22nd, 2009, 7:58am
A king has two sons, who were brought up in a distant village. The king residing in his palace exclaims to the village: 'My two sons, you must cross this desert between us on one camel each. The owner of the camel that reaches the palace last shall be my heir...'

The two sons confused by their father's words roam the desert aimlessly, not knowing what to do.
For if they killed each other, the victor of the battle would not be reaching the palace last. During their confusion, they noticed their supplies were running thin and were forced to seek a wise-man's help. Upon reaching the wise-man, the man told them some words of wisdom.

In the end, the two sons were alive and well, and one became king in all fairness. How was this decided? What did the wise-man say?

Wise Man: What kind of idiots would do this trip without more food?

or

Wise Man: I'll give you candy if you get there first

OR

Wise Man: Who races camels? I mean, it's like watching paint dry. In a humid, humid environment

or

Wise Man: There's a sandstorm coming so if you guys don't decide soon.....

Umm, those solutions don't help the sons meet the conditions of the 'anti-race'. Think about how they actually fufill the conditions.

Well camels look alike. I mean when your talking about horses with their different colors and such

Strictly speaking it's a common riddle and I just love the invention of sarcasm (although I admit it's a lot harder to do that in Chinese. For me at least.)

Oh I got another one

Wise Man: If I'm so wise, what am I doing in the desert all alone?

You just beat me to it.
So I'll supplement it with http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~wwu/riddles/easy.shtml#arabSheikhCamels

The king can obviously see what is happening from afar from his vantage point...

Wise men live in deserts because they like to help lost strangers.

Maybe he doesn't suffer fools gladly, and hence has to flee the civilized world.

Lots of supposedly wise hermits took to living in deserts and other remote places throughout human history, btw.

It's not beyond the realm of possibilities there's a version with horses as well.
Next time, we can place the riddle in the sunken continent of Atlantis and the sons can ride dolphins. How does that sound?

Yeah, [hide]switch camels[/hide].

I just noticed that the way it's phrased it seems like the camel becomes the heir. :P
Boy, are these princes in for a disappointment.
