A little boy is choking. There are ten other people in the room, alive. They all see him fine, yet they don't help him. Bear in mind that they do not mean to harm the little boy and they do know that he is choking.

Why doesn't the little boy get help?

They are practical Spartans.

Or the boy must drink a large pill immediately that can save his life.

Or they see him fine but there is a bulletproof glass between them.

Or the boy was sentenced to death by choking. He is actually 30 years old, but he was frozen in ice.

Or all of the ten people are invalids. Their eyes work well, but not their legs.

Or there is 11th man telling them not to move or he'll activate an explosive device.

Or the little boy is holding a gun.

[hide]He's in some way performing, perhaps a spelling bee or acting. The choking is metaphorical, he simply fails to perform rather than being in imminent danger of dying from asphyxiation.[/hide]

The little boy is a toy that imitates choking.

Or the cat's name is 'Boy'.

Because he's coughing and making noise meaning he's still getting air. In which case it is best to let him cough out the blockage by himself instead of attempting to do something more extreme and potentially completely cutting off his air.

The other ten in the room are little boys and girls, or rather, babies, in an infant intensive care unit and are thus incapable of helping.

...or...

They are trapped in a burning building and they are all choking.

Everyone else in the room are adult males who are not invalid. Sir Col pretty much got it: they were all choking, the room was sealed
