Title: Time
Post by gotit on Apr 24th, 2008, 7:33am
Jonathan woke up from his sleep and felt that he was late for the important meeting that was scheduled for the day. So he looked at the wall clock to see the time. And although the clock was functioning properly, he was not able to know the time. Why?

It was still dark night.

Or his wife sprayed the clock with black color.

Or there was no wall.

Or it is a wall clock, but it was not on the wall.

Or the clock was made in China.

Or only God can tell the right time.

Or everything is relative because of the theory of relativity.

He was in a boat.  He drunk like there is no tomorrow the night before.  He couldn't tell whether it is the morning or the afteroon.  Anyway, on the boat, he don't know if they crossed a timeline and whether the clock has been adjusted.  To make matters worse, today is the end of daylight saving time.  He faintly remembers he wanted to adjust the clock, but doesn't remember whether he did it.  Anyway the staff was supposed to do it during the day.  Did they come already? He couldn't tell.  It could even be he adjusted the time, but after the staff did it, or that he adjusted it in the wrong direction.  And there is his cabin mate who mentioned it shoud be set to GMT.  Did he set the clock to GMT?  How can you tell?  Well, all this isn't very important considering that from where he is lying (in the shower, completely dressed and soaked) he can see the clock in the mirror but not read the time because it is facing the other side.

No to all.

There was enough light.
He was a bachelor.
There were four walls in the room.
The clock was in the wall right in front of him.
The clock wasn't made in China. And even if it were, how does that matter?
Who said that only God can tell the time. I am not very religious though.
He never heard about Einstein, forget about relativity.

He was above the arctic circle in summer where there is 24 hr sunlight. The clock is analog so he could not tell if it was am or pm.

He is in the Chinese stock market and there are plenty of wall clocks showing the time in all the important cities.  Each clock is neatly labeled with the name of the city, but unfortunately he doesn't read Chinese.

Of course, the clocks are not Chinese, they can afford clocks made in Switzerland.  ;)

The clock was functioning properly but the batteries weren’t.

Or they are cruising in a yacht, so he should consider different time zones.

The clock was functioning properly, but the hands fell off

The meeting was about how easily clocks could be changed to be wrong, or about practical jokes or something. He was the host, but he was late(he was still asleep when it happened) and they changed his clock.

No to all. He was in a room and the clock was perfect. The batteries were OK and the hands did not fall off.

Think riddlers, think...

Btw, one of you is sort of on the right track. But I won't say who for now.

Do I sound like Icey?

Btw, this riddle is not one that I have framed on my own. I actually saw it happen a few days ago and thought of putting it as a riddle.

Was he wearing those blinders that some sleepers use to keep the light out of their eyes?

Jonathan is a trained chimp.

Or he is a shark so he rolled his eyes backwards.

No to both.

He is late for his first lesson of 101 Clock Reading.

No. It was not a clock reading class. It was an official meeting.

He woke up after the sun had been shining on his face for awhile. After he woke up, he stared at the sun by accident and gave him temporary blindness.

Maybe staring at his fiancée gave him temporary blindness. And if he marries her, he will be blind forever.

No. [hide]Blindness is involved but you have to be more specific.[/hide] Oops, I think it's a big hint. ;)

The clock hands and background of the clock are of particular colors that are indistinguishable to the color blind.

Rainbow or daltonism? I remember the movie Abyss. How could I forget it? It had unidentified swimming objects. Anyway, when the protagonist wanted to cut the right wire, he couldn’t distinguish colors because of the water.

i agree with denis tht the clock hands were indistinguishable due to the background.....

Yes. The backgorund was green and the hands were red. Jonathan was a victim of red-green color blindness.
