Title: Mysterious Death
Post by onlyme722 on Mar 4th, 2008, 2:30pm
There is a man out in the middle of the Saharan desert.  He is laying face down in the sand...middle of nowhere, miles and miles of sand.  He is dead.  There is a rock in his vicinity.  There are no tracks, just a man, and the rock.  How did this man end up here dead?

This is one of those where if you ask me the RIGHT questions you will solve it quite easily.

The rock's exact location specific to him isn't necessarily important, but you should ask yourself how important it is overall.

And of course, if you've heard this one, don't bother posting the answer :P.

Has it got something to do with nicotine?  ;)

hahaha, nope.

This one requires a lot of thinking outside of the box, and should be embraced with leading questions.  It is, of course, possible to solve it without further clues.  However, it lends itself very well to some clever questions.

I think you'd need to have seen the movie.

oh, oh , oh, pick me! (raises hand)
[hide]the guy was parachuting, and instead of a parachute, there was a rock[/hide]
or an anvil.

Tiber.  NO. :)

Parachute is usually the first guess so that's ok.

He's an astronaut that was on a spacewalk. And then he got hit with a meteorite and fell to earth. On impact the meteorite that was lodged in his head fell out.

I like the lines along which you are thinking.  Don't let let me lead you astray, you are completely wrong (in terms of the specific answer I am looking for) but it was still a very good answer!

Continue to use your....Imagination. ;)

(Sorry Grimbal, didn't mean to leave ya out.)

No, but you're in the right arena of thought.

Is the fact that the man is lying face down important?
Are there any injury marks in his body?
Is the man real or fictitious. If it's the later, I would guess that [hide]the man is Superman and the rock is something that would harm him. I don't quite remember tha name of the rock[/hide].

Yes!  You are right, I'm surprised...this one usually takes several good questions for someone to get even close :P  Are ya sure you haven't heard this one before?  Anyways, yes,
[hideb]it is superman and the rock is kryptonite.  he was flying in the air and came in contact with it, colliding, both end up in the desert[/hideb]

... hence my reference to nicotine (although upon reflection I think it was "tar"). You might recall in Superman III that Richard Prior's character - the computer genius - was tasked to determine the exact chemical composition of kryptonite in order to synthetically produce some to kill superman. He used a computer to search space for debris of the destroyed world, Krypton, and using a spectrometer he managed to identify all of the elements except for one unknown compound. He sat at his computer frustrated and had almost given up when he noticed on the side of his cigarette packet it said something like, "Cigarettes contain tar which can kill" (I don't know exactly what the American version of the health warning says).

Well I didn't see that movie so I wouldn't have known the correlation between kryptonite and nicotine, but in all fairness, nicotine still wasn't a sufficient answer, even if it was a small part of the whole answer.  Next time don't be afraid to be more specific :).

You've not seen the movies?!  :o

Oh, and I couldn't be more specific because I knew the answer.

It's been so long if I even HAD seen the movies :P.  But anyways, there is superman of lore, superman of cartoon, and superman in the movies.  Nicotine is far too specific for it depends on one depiction of the character and story.  Kryptonite is a consistent variable in every superman conception across the board....do I make any sense? =P

Yup. Quite sure. Actually Grimbal's response about the Baron and your reply that he was in the right arena of thought gave me a hint.

I wasn't suggesting that nicotine was the answer, I was trying to hint to you that I already knew the answer without giving too much away to other people. You'll begin to notice that it's the sort of thing that a number of us regulars around here do, and we often use these cryptic posts as additional clues.

I getcha.  If I had known to what you were referring we wouldn't have had to have this conversation haha.  But I do appreciate that you didn't ruin it for others.

In any case, Superman is gone, man. That's it. Game over.  Rests assure he doesn't need kryptonite anymore to make him weaker. I find that rather surreal. In fact, I'm a bit disappointment by him, that he died and all, particularly the manner in which he passed away on to the next world. What kind of a way is that? I mean, he was Superman, right?

I remember gazing at the TV screen when Superman was on, when I was but a kid. The plot was very interesting to me, and the whole movie was like angel dust drug to me. And now, I am Superpenguin, trying to carry on the tradition of original Hollywood Superman sequels. It's a bird. It's a plane. no, it's........... Superpenguin!  8)

It was tar. Which explains why it didn't kill Superman, just got him disoriented.
