Inspector White is in charge of a murder case. The lead brings him to Tom's house, the prime suspect, but he recently departed. It is of most importance for inspector to find him ASAP, thus inspector snoops around the house together with police officers. They carefully inspect entire house, which has usual objects inside it. And then inspector gives an order to leave, since there was nothing in the house conveying clearly where Tom went. Inspector was about to leave with others, but then he changes his mind, and soon realizes clearly where Tom went. How?

.......someone said that there can be hundreds of reasons, but I still decided to post this riddle, because I cannot think of any other reason, other than the answer I have in mind. Then again, I'm not a policeman, so perhaps I overlooked other things. Heh, I wonder if someone here can provide alternative answers.

Let's try the obvious answers:

Open on the desk was a catalog from a travel agency. An expensive cruise was circled in red. Besides the circle, a yellow post-it says: "Yes! That is what I want to do with the money I stole in the bank". An arrow points to the picture of the boat.

or

He saw there is no more toilet paper. So he went to the local supermarket.

or

He got a message over radio from Jack, an FBI sniper who receives orders to take out Tom immediately with his sniper rifle. Jack says that Tom is unarmed standing in the middle of the roof.

No. The answer is an easy one, I suspect, but it is not that simple. Don't you think that they would notice this right away?

and the seat was up
so she was with her boyfriend
so they tracked him, and he was flyind to Mexico

He remembers to try the phone. Pressing the redial button, he got the message "Malaysian Airlines, how can we help you ?"

He went back and had a look at the keyboard (i.e. the plank with hooks and keys hanging). There is exactly one key on each hook. There is one empty hook, and the label says "Warehouse". White knows about the warehouse Tom owns.

I like JiNbOtAk's idea. And I think that you can figure out the intended answer as well because it is close to the.. oops, I almost gave it away. ;)

Well, he tried the answering machine then..which gives the recorded message, "I'm calling from Malaysian Airlines to confirm your one way ticket to the Caymans. " ( Always wanted to go there..anyone been there yet ? )

The old trick would be the paper pad near the phone where you can read what was written on the previous paper.

I have tried the trick. For the note to be readable on the next page (even after using a pencil to reveal it) Tom must have written it with such a force that you would probably think that Tom actually wanted the note to be read.

It was an old ballpoint so he had to apply more force. ;) And you know what they say: if you want something done do it yourself. Poor detective. ::)

If I'm not mistaken, the writing would only be legilible if blotting paper was used. Although I could not understand why Tom would use one when he's writing with a ballpoint pen.

It was a usual writing pad. No need to use blotting paper. I just used the ballpoint and pad like that, and voila. As I said, it was an old ballpoint, and as Grimbal suggested Tom pressed it harder.

Heh, just to justify your concern about the blotting paper, it was a custom-made blotting pad. Aw man.. ::)
