Title: Roommates
Post by Iceman on Dec 29th, 2007, 11:02am
John has a new roommate, Benny. So he gives him the tour of the house, and currently they are in the bedroom. There's a bunk bed, nightstand and closet, representing all of the furniture there. But even though the above two beds look identical in all respects, and there's nothing unusual, Benny knew where John's former roommate was laying. How?

John had a bum leg and would have had to take the lower bunk?

Good idea. :) But in my version he has two legs and he is in topnotch health.  ;)  ::)

John is a dwarf. There is no ladder between the bunks.

John laid down on one of the beds, obviously claiming it as his own, and giving the other one to Benny.

.........another good idea. So, let me say now, a bit to late, that it has nothing to do with John. Benny realized where John's roommate was laying on his own. So forget about John.     ;)

The beds may look identical, but what about the surroundings? ::)

One of the bunks didn't have a mattress/blankets?

Or it had, but didn't show any signs of someone having slept there recently?

What does that mean?

No. Identical in all respects. So the same mattresses and everything else.

Presumably, the nightstand belongs to John and can only be accessed from one of the two bunks (most probably the lower one). But I would guess that there is something special on the nightstand would make this relationship more obvious. e.g. some personal items like his pills, telephone, or some other such object.

100 LED signs pointing to the lower bunk saying "John's bunk".

Which bed belongs to John, the top or the bottom ? Or it doesn't matter ?

The bed may look identical, but only John's had pillows.

...........the same pillows too, no signs and nightstand is unimportant.

The beds may look identical, but what about how they  smell or feel?

For instance if John has a particularly offensive odor, then finding the right bed is easy.

Or perhaps one is warmer to the touch than the other one since it is early morning and John recently just got up.

No. He didn't smell or touch anything.

The outline on the floor made with white tape?
Why do you think John needs a new roommate?

You got it. But don't they use chalk instead when someone is killed?

The thought of a murder scene had occured to me but Ice mentioned in his riddle "and there's nothing unusual".

A murder or death occuring is unusual under any circumstances so I discounted that possibility but congrats to Grimbal nonetheless.

Prince Akeem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coming_to_america) didn't find it so unusual when he rented a room in Queens..  :P

The old roommate was dead, not John.
