Title: Shotgun
Post by Iceman on Oct 9th, 2007, 8:04am
Jonathan has just several cartridges left in his shotgun, and his pursuers are gaining on him. There are no other human made objects anywhere near or other life forms for that matter. Jonathan fires all the cartridges aiming down at, pretty much, one spot only, which weren't meant to hurt his pursuers. But why then?

He crosses a wooden bridge on a pass and shoots at a spot to break the bridge so that his pursuers can't cross?

Assuming that his pursuers are driving some sort of vehicle, maybe he fired at the wheels?

That would seem to me to rule out biathlon targets, vehicle wheels, and all but the most primitive of bridges. ::)

Was he [hide]shooting a hole in a frozen lake/pond[/hide]?

Hmmm a [hide] frozen lake without any fishes? [/hide]... well another try..

He was shooting at a [hide] beaver dam so that it floods [/hide] and takes the pursuers along with it...

Jonathan fires the remaining cartridges into the rocky slope beneath him (then runs) creating a rockslide that with hinder/stop the pursuers?

(Finally it let me post  ::) )

No.

[hide]Jonathan and his pursuers were inside a tunnel. Jonathan fired at some loose rocks that fell and blocked the pursuers' path[/hide].

Jo is a seal.  He fires a hole in the ice to escape under water.

Title: Re: Shotgun

Jonathan is climbing a mountain, steep hill or cliff. He shoots away the ice ledge, small tree, shrub or foothold that allowed him to gain purchase and reach the top.

Title: Re: Shotgun

He was climbing a mountain. He shot right underneath his foot to cause an avalanche, crushing his pursuers but leaving him uninjured, since he shot below him.

[hide]Jonathan and his pursuers were in a tunnel. It had a pit in the middle that was covered by a plank of wood for people to cross over. After crossing the pit, Jonathan fired at the plank of wood to destroy it so that his pursuers would not be able to cross over.[/hide]

Title: Re: Shotgun

[hide]Jonathan had just crossed a very long rope and plank bridge across a huge canyon. In the absence of a knife to cut the ropes, he used the remaining cartridges to sever the ropes and thus his pursuers can't follow[/hide]?

Wasn't it [hide] James bond, sliding down the ramp of the stairs [/hide]?

Title: Re: Shotgun
Post by cchris on Oct 17th, 2007, 9:30am
I was thinking he was [hide]climbing a rope, that went around some sort of pulley, and his attackers were climbing up as well, and in order to escape he shoots the rope, causing the attackers to fall but himself to go upwards and escape[/hide]. I know it's not right, but just an alternate solution.

I like DC1E2L's answer but ima1trkpny is no the right track. Remember, there were no man made objects near. And yes, it was a movie.  ;)

That is because I don't know what you're talking about. This is not flattering for me, not you, I suppose.

Title: Re: Shotgun
Post by Grimbal on Oct 18th, 2007, 5:29am
Anyway, there are no man-made objects nearby, that would exclude a tunnel and a plank.

And if Iceman doesn't understand what you are talking about, it is very unlikely to be the intended solution.

Iceman, the idea was [hide] that a plank is used as a bridge over a pit, a pit that otherwise can not be crossed, and by firing at the plank, Jonathan either destroys the plank, or makes it so fragile that nobody would dare walk on it.[/hide]

Jonathan is Tarzan / Indiana Jones / any hero swinging from vine to vine. He shot at the vines so the goons could not swing to him.

When you say no man-made objects, you don't mean their clothes too, did you ?  :P

Does "pursuer" necessarily mean they want to harm jonathan? Maybe he was shooting into the ground below to give his pursuers some acoustic direction to locate him. Maybe he was lost.

WTF got it, I suppose, because I said no other life forms. Is tree a life form? :-[ If not, then he shoots the living tree to create an improvised bridge. I saw this in a movie once.   ::)

Well, obviously trees lose their leaves in autumn because they're depressed about the impending winter. So that means they have feelings, and if they have feelings they must have a soul as well.  ;)

Now you're getting into more sci-fi-y stuff. In the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th books of the Ender series, the "piggies" third life form is a tree which has souls, minds, and feelings, so if you were talking about them, then I guess that would apply.
