Title: Evolution
Post by mikedagr8 on Aug 31st, 2007, 1:55am
Three uninhabited islands were within swimming distance form each other but only at certain times of the year. This depended on strong currents that flowed between them. A group of naturalist explorers put animal 'x' on island "A", animal 'y' on island "B" and animal 'z' on island "C". No other animals were on hte islands an no other animals visited the islands.

When the explorers returned several years later they found island "A" had no animals on it. Island "B" had animals 'x' and 'y' plus one new animal on it, and island "C" had the same type of animals as island "B" plus 'z' and another new animal. Can you name the five animals?

Probably should be in what am i, but I'll leave it here for now.

ROFL, no, this is an actual puzzle, so it's real. I like that thinking though.

Can x be the male of one species and y the female of the same species or are we talking different species altogether?

If x and y are just male and female, they're not really different species, just different genders. These are all different types of animals. E.g. one may be a turtle and another an elephant. Not a female leopard and a male leopard.

X,Y,Z: horse, donkey, zebra
The other new species: Mule (cross between a horse and a donkey) and Zorse (a cross between a zebra and horse)

Zorse and mule are known as hybrids and are considered seperate species from the original parents.

There are other possibilities such as Cow, Bison and Yak for X, Y Z,

A cow/yak cross gives a Dzo and a Bison/Cow cross gives a Zubron both which are considered hybrids.

Yes, and there are examples with big cats as well.
