Title: Swindlers & riddlers
Post by Iceman on Jul 15th, 2007, 10:24am
Tom was trying to con Timmy who saw through him, because Tom used Timmy's phone. What happened?

Timmy saw that Tom was using Timmy's cellular phone to make a long distance call.

No. It wasn't a cellular phone.

Tom was trying to con Timmy into breaking up with Tom's fiance for him over the phone by claiming he didn't know how to use one, but Timmy realized that couldn't be true because Tom had used Timmy's phone to order pizza.  ;)

Tom was pretending to be from the banks, requesting Timmy's PIN number, only  problem is he called Timmy's cell from Timmy's fixed line.

It looks to me that both of you are headed in the right direction, but no smoking gun yet.

Tom did made a mistake, yes, but he wasn't that stupid. And this happened in the previous century.   ;)

Gosh.  It used to be that "from the previous century" means antique.  That time has gone.

It is worse with "from the beginning of the century".  It used to mean ancient, it now means quite recent.

My sentiments exactly. A phone from the previous century could range from the very basic-slightly-better-than-morse-code-tapping to quite acceptable cellphones.

Did you just offered an answer or you are chitchatting?

Uh?  You are still there?  Well, we are pondering on the meaning of the hint given.  It seems the most meaningful part is "it happened".

Hmm, is there any part of my comments that could be construed as an answer ? I guess I am chit-chatting.  Hey Grimby, a/s/l ? ;D

Just to clarify Icey, when you say previous century, which century are you referring to ?

The one that had phones.

Is the portable kind of phone the phone used? I don't mean mobile/cellular, i mean like the one where you can walk around with it in a certain area only, its a landline.

Back then there were no cellular phones, or at least not sophisticated as today.

Actually, it doesn't have to be the previous century. I just mentioned it because I thought it is more correct that way. Whatever.

That didn't seem to answer my question  ::)

You can use it in your home, maybe even outside standing close to your home. Did this answer your question? It is the phone like any other. It cannot beam you up or sing 'don't cry for me Argentina.'

Maybe Timmy heard some background noise that he recognized to be from his apartment?  For instance, Tom was searching Timmy's apartment and called him to set an appointment somewhere else to buy some time.

I suppose *66 only exists in America.   :-[

Dialing *66 redials the last number you dialed on your phone.  It works for both cell phones and land lines, just so you know.  I would guess there is some kind of similar service in most areas but maybe I am wrong.  Anyway, I was thinking along the lines of this: [hide]Tom called Timmy in an attempt to scam him.  When Timmy dialed *66, he heard his own answering machine pick up and knew that it was Tom who had tried to scam him earlier.  This seems to fit the original riddle but I don't know why Tom would need to be in the room for this to work, as you recently hinted he was.[/hide]

Alternatively, perhaps after redialing he was connected him to the local How-To-Run-A-Scam Helpline.

[hide]I suppose drop-calling is a tad silly when they can see you dialling and hanging up...[/hide]

Yes, you got it. The phone had redial button.

Out of curiosity, why did they need to be in the same room?

Even without a redial button, you could always call the operator and ask the last number received.

If Tom used Timmy's phone to call Timmy, whose phone was Timmy using to answer Tom's call ??  :P

Perhaps they were in England, and I don't think English had operator.

He didn't call Timmy, but Timmy obviously heard his conversation over the phone, so when he pressed the redial button, he realized he called someone else, thus inferred that he is swindler.

No, *69 redials the number that last called you.  *66 redials the number that you last called (intended for redialing busy numbers).

Or something like that.
